Tyrone Willingham Biography
Lionel Tyrone "Ty" Willingham is a retired American football player and coach. At the time of his live profession, he was the head coach at Standford University from 1995 to 2001, University of Washington from 2005 to 2008 and the University of Notre Dame from 2002 to 2004. He has been known for his compiling career in football of college level. For which he also holds the world record. Currently he has been serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the Standford University women’s golf team.
Willingham was born on December 30th, 1953 in Kinston, North Carolina. For his educational background, he had attended Jacksonville Senior High School in Jacksonville, North Carolina. At his school life he was pro in basketball and baseball. Later he joined Michigan State University where he played football and baseball and graduated in 1977 with a degree in physical education. At the time of his university life, he had held assistant coaching positions at his alma mater (1977, 1980–82), Central Michigan University (1978–79), North Carolina State University (1983–85), Rice University (1986–88), and Stanford University (1989–91).
In 1994, despite lacking experience as a head coach or coordinator, Willingham was successfully appointed as head coach of the football program at Stanford, succeeding Bill Walsh. Afterwards in his seven seasons from 1995 to 2001 as a coach he had led the cardinal to 44-36-1 record and four bowl game appearances. Eventually in 2000, he was allowed to present along with the Eddie Robinson Coach of Distinction Award and also was given an honor of "an outstanding college football coach and role model for career achievement". On December 31, 2001, Willingham was hired as head coach at Notre Dame. During his career, he had begun the 2002 season by going 8-0 and also went on to become the only first- year coach in Notre Dame history to win 10 games. His outstanding potential in game field was praise worthy and for his effort he was named the ESPN/Home Depot Collge Coach of the year. On December 13, 2004, Willingham was hired as the new head coach at Washington, succeeding Keith Gilbertson. He found himself facing his former team on September 24, 2005. On the record his 2006 Washington team started to play from October with a 4–1 record, with its most notable victory a stunning 29–19 upset over previously undefeated UCLA, before losing its next 6 games after starting quarterback Isaiah Stanback suffered a season ending foot injury in a loss to Oregon State in their sixth game.
At present Willingham is serving as one of the thirteen members of The College Football Playoff Selection Committee.
