Tom Wilkinson Biography
Thomas Geoffery Wilkinson, better known by his professional name, Tom Wilkinson, is an English actor for the big and small screen and stage. He celebrates his birthday every year on 5th of February and was born in the year 1948. His notable work includes movies such as The Full Monty, Wilde, Shakespeare in Love, The Patriot, In the Bedroom, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Batman Begins, are among many others.
He was born in Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom to urban farmer parents. They had a hard time and moved to Canada while Tom was still in his early childhood. On their return to England, they started a pub in Cornwall. He went to University of Kent and graduated from there with a degree in American Literature and English. During his college, he was a member of the T24 Drama Society which was then named as UKCD. After that, he attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. In July 2001, he received a Doctor of Letters honorary degree from his alma mater University of Kent and was awarded the Officer of the Order of British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth in the 2005 New Year Honours for services to Drama.
To start off his acting career, he debuted in the year 1976 and worked on several British TV series most notably in the mini-series First Among Equals in 1986. In 1994 he worked in the BBC’s adaptation of Martin Chuzzlewit which earned him much critical praises. He did not get international fame until 1997, when he was cast in the movie The Full Monty. The role got him a BAFTA Award and made in an international actor. After that, he received roles in other American movies like Oscar and Lucinda, The Patriot, Shakespeare in Love and Wilde. For his performance in the movie In the Bedroom, he received the Best Actor award by the New York Film Critics' Circle and an Oscar nomination. His other notable movies are Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Separate Lies, Normal, Michael Clayton, Cassandra’s Dream and many others. In 2008, he was cast in the HBO mini-series John Adams, where he portrayed the American patriot Benjamin Franklin which won him an Emmy Award. For his portrayal of James A. Baker in the HBO movie, Recount, he received a lot of critical acclaim. He also played as another historical character, Joseph P. Kennedy in the 2011 TV mini-series The Kennedys. His recent work can be seen in the movies Belle, Felony, The Lone Ranger, Sleeping Dogs, and The Grand Budapest Hotel.
He is married to Diana Hardcastle. His wife is a fellow actress and she appeared as his reel life wife in the mini-series The Kennedys. They tied the knot in the year 1998. They have two children together, both daughters, Alice, born in 1989 and Molly, born in 1992. Currently, he resided in his home in North London with his wife and kids. Tom seems to be living a blissful family life and from the looks of it, divorce is out of the picture for many years to come.
