Born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV on July 3, 1962 is the celebrated American actor and filmmaker, Tom Cruise. Cruise had his breakout role as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in the 1986 movie Top Gun which made him a full-fledged movie star. He is also known for his role as secret agent Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible film series since 1996. One of the A-list Hollywood actors, his notable credits includes several successful movies such as The Color of Money (1986), Rain Man (1988), Cocktail (1988), Born on the Fourth of July (1989), A Few Good Men (1992), Far and Away (1992), The Firm (1993), Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994), Jerry Maguire (1996), Magnolia (1999), Eyes Wide Shut (1999), Vanilla Sky (2001), Minority Report (2002), The Last Samurai (2003), Collateral (2004), War of the Worlds (2005), Lions for Lambs (2007), Valkyrie (2008), Knight and Day (2010), Jack Reacher (2012), Oblivion (2013), and Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Cruise was born in Syracuse, New York, United States to a special education teacher, Mary Lee, and an electrical engineer,Thomas Cruise Mapother III (1934–84)]. He has three sisters, Marian, Lee Anne, and Cass. He has Irish, German, and English ancestry. Cruise's family moved to the Ottawa suburb of Beacon Hill in late 1971 so that his father could work with the Canadian Armed Forces. There, Tom attended Robert Hopkins Public School. It was there he got interested in acting. He and his sisters returned back to the US with their mother, after their parents separated and then he attended a Franciscan seminary in Cincinnati on a church scholarship and aspiring to become a Catholic priest.
Cruise debuted into movies in the 1981 film Endless Love. After portraying supporting roles in Taps (1981) and The Outsiders (1983), his first leading role was in Risky Business, released in August 1983. With his blockbuster movie Top Gun, he followed suit with The Color of Money, Rain Man, which won the Academy Award for Best Film and Cruise, Born on the Fourth of July, which earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama, the Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Best Actor, the People's Choice Award for Favorite Motion Picture Actor, a nomination for BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, and Cruise's first Best Actor Academy Award nomination. The 90s was good for him as he gave movies like ruise's Days of Thunder (1990), Far and Away (1992), Vampire (1994), In Mission: Impossible (1996), Jerry Maguire (1996), for which he earned a Golden Globe and his second Academy Award nomination, Eyes Wide Shut (1999), and Magnolia, for which he received another Golden Globe and nomination for an Academy Award. Cruise had a relationship with Rebecca De Mornay from 1983 to 1985. On May 9, 1987, he married actress Mimi Rogers and divorced two years later on February 4, 1990. Rogers introduced Cruise to Scientology. Then he married actress Nicole Kidman, on December 24, 1990. They adopted two children, Isabella Jane and Connor Antony. In February 2001, he filed for divorce from Kidman. He then dated actress Penélope Cruz, but he relationship ended in 2004. In April 2005, Cruise began dating actress Katie Holmes. On October 6, 2005, Holmes and Cruise announced they were expecting a child, and their daughter, Suri, was born in April 2006. They tied the knot on November 18, 2006. After five and a half years of marriage, on June 29, 2012, it was announced that Holmes had filed for divorce from Cruise which was finalized on July 9, 2012.
