Ruben Studdard :: Biography
Ruben Studdard is a popular American R&B, pop and gospel singer. He was born in 1978 as Christopher Ruben Studdard and celebrates his birthday on 12th of September every year. His fame rocketed as he became the winner of the second season of American singing reality show American Idol. In December 2003, he got a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for the song Superstar. His fame as the American Idol winner made way for him to establish himself in the American music industry. He released his debut studio album Soulful which became platinum-selling debut. His gospel follow-up I Need an Angel was another top selling album. He has released three more album after that, his latest one being Unconditional Love released on February 4, 2014. Besides singing, he has appeared in the comedy drama Heaven I Need a Hug in 2008 and Ain’t Misbehavin’. He also participated in the reality show The Biggest Loser.
His father was a U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany and it was there Ruben was born. He was raised in Birmingham, Alabama. He sang for the first time at the Rising Star Baptist Church when he was just three years old. His mother was a choir singer and he performed solo and sang gospels at church. He attended Huffman High School and received a scholarship to Alabama A&M University by playing football. He was the member of men’s music fraternity of America called the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He graduated with a major in Voices Studies. He then started singing with a famous local Birmingham jazz and R&B band Just a Few Cats and was working hard to make a name in the music industry.
His prayers were answered as he went for and got selected at the 2003 American Idol Tennessee audition. He was praised by famous music personalities during the show and earned the nick name Velvet Teddy Bear. He won the contest with becoming the second winner of the American Idol. In his honor, March 11, 2003 as Ruben Day by the Alabama Governor Bob Riley. He never had to look back after that. Following his win, he released his first single which was the cover of Westlife’s song Flying Without Wings which debuted the Billboard Hot 100 at number 2. His first album topped the 1 million mark for advanced order long before it was released. The album was a huge commercial success and debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart. His second album did pretty well too, selling over 96,000 copies in its first week. He released his third album The Return in October 2006. He then released his fourth album Love Is on May 19, 2009. His fifth release Letters from Birmingham came in March 2012. He participated in the 15th season of NBC’s show The Biggest Loser, a weight loss competition show. He had the weight of 462 pounds at the beginning in the finale of the show, which was also the release date of his fifth album, it was revealed that he had lost a total of 119 pounds and weighed 343 pounds. He released his sixth album Unconditional Love. His acting credits include TV series like 8 Simple Rules, Eve, Life on a Stick and All of Us. He created The Ruben Studdard Foundation for the Advancement of Children in the Music Arts.
He married Surata Zuri McCants on June 28, 2008. He had met his to-be wife in October 2006, when he was signing CDs at Walmart in Atlanta. The relationship, however, could not sustain the rough patches they had. Studdard’s attorney announced on November 16, 2011 that the couple was on the verge of divorce.
