Rodger Bumpass | Biography
Rodger Bumpass is an American character and voice actor. He celebrates his birthday every year on November 20 and was born in the year 1951 as Rodger Albert Bumpass. He is popularly known for his long-running role as Squidward Tentacles on the American animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants. Besides that, he also has lent his voice to many other characters on the show, such as Dr. Gill Gilliam and various anchovies. His other voicing credits include that of Mr. Besser, the school principal in the animated series The Kids from Room 402 and The Chief in the animated series Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego? as well as in several other animated TV series, animated films, and video games.
He is a native of Jonesboro, Arkansas, United States of America as he was born and spent most of his early childhood there. There is little or no information about his parents, how he was raised and his early life. For his high school education, he went to Little Rock Central High School and it was there he received his first theatrical training. After that, he attended Arkansas State University graduating from there with a major in radio–TV and minor in theater. During that time, he worked at the campus radio station and also at the ABC-affiliated television station, KAIT-TV, engaged in several duties such as announcer, cameraman, film processor, technical director, and audio technician. He also wrote, produced, and performed in a late-night comedy program called Mid-Century Nonsense Festival Featuring Kumquat Theater for KAIT. Upon graduation from ASU in 1976, he went to New York in June 1977 to consider professional theater.
That marked the beginning of his acting career. The same year, he landed a role in the National Lampoon's music and comedy road show called That's Not Funny, That's Sick and in 1980, he originated the character of 'Fartman' to appear on the National Lampoon LP The White Album. His best known role, undoubtedly, is that of of Squidward Tentacles, Dr. Gill Gilliam and the anchovies on the Nickelodeon animated comedy series SpongeBob SquarePants. For his role as Squidward on Spongebob Squarepants, he received a Daytime Emmy Award nomination in 2012. He is also known for his roles in Monsters, Inc. and Toy Story 2. Although he has been predominantly voicing and acting in films since the 60s, and had also appeared on stage through the mid 70's until the late 80s.
