Richard Chamberlain was born as George Richard Chamberlain in the year 1934 and celebrates his birthday on March 31 every year. He is an American actor or the big and small screen and stage and singer. His fame rocketed as he became a teen idol during the decade of 60s with his role in the popular television show Dr. Kildare. His other honorable mentions include mini-series such as Sh?gun (1980) and The Thorn Birds (1983), many successful films, classical stage roles and musical theatres.
He is a native of Beverly Hills, California, United States of America. He was born as the son to father Charles Axiom Chamberlain, who worked as a salesman and mother Elsa Winnifred. Besides that not much is known about his early life and childhood. About his high school education, he attended Beverly Hills High School and graduated from there in the year 1952. Then he went on to study at Pmomona College and was the class of 1956.
Chamberlain started off his career as he became the co-founder of a Los Angeles-based theatre group called Company of Angels, and started appearing in television series in the 1950s. His earlier roles include his portrayal of Lt. Dave Winslow in a 1960 episode of the NBC western series called Riverboat. Within less than a year, later in 1961, Richard gained widespread fame as he was cast as the young intern, Dr. Kildare, in the NBC/MGM television series of the same name, alongside Raymond Massey. Thanks to his singing ability which added much to his fame and led to some hit singles in the early 1960s such as the "Theme from Dr. Kildare" entitled "Three Stars Will Shine Tonight”. The series Dr. Kildare ended in 1966 making way for Chamberlain’s theatre performances. His important theater credits include musical Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Broadway revivals of My Fair Lady and The Sound of Music. The 70’s decade was successful one for Chamberlain with films such as The Three Musketeers, The Music Lovers, Lady Caroline Lamb, The Towering Inferno, The Lady's Not for Burning, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Slipper and the Rose, The Man in the Iron Mask, The Last Wave and many others. He was named the king of mini-series after appearing in popular ones such as Centennial (1978–79), Sh?gun (1980), and The Thorn Birds (1983). After the 80’s was over, he started appearing on television movies and on stage.
Talking about his personal life, during the early 70s, Chamberlain was romantically involved with the TV actor Wesley Eure. He met actor-writer-producer Martin Rabbett in the year 1977 and started a long term relationship with him. The relationship was termed as civil union in the state of Hawaii where he stayed with Martin from 1986 to 2010. In 2010, Richard moved back to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career. He accepted his homosexuality not until 2003 meaning that he has confirmed being gay. He has never married and has no question of having a wife or going through divorce.
