After ‘American Idol’ premiered in 2002, the singing competition didn’t took a long time to be an household name around the world.

After a two-year hiatus, American Idol returned with its 16th season on ABC on May 21, 2018 and has just finished the season with the winner, Maddie Poppe. 

Has reality show been successful over the years in not only producing but also establishing the new talents in the industry? 

Let’s take a closer look at the life and achievements of the past seven champions 

Season 1 winner: Kelly Clarkson (2002)

As of now, Kelly Clarkson has won three Grammys and released eight studio albums along with eleven promotional singles.

Kelly just won the 2018 season of the NBC singing competition, The Voice, as a judge and will also return as a judge next season.

Season 2 winner: Ruben Studdard (2003)

Rubben, who was nominated for Grammy in the category Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, has released six studio albums to date.

He also appeared in the 15th season of the NBC reality show, The Biggest Loser, which aired from Oct 15, 2013 to Feb 4, 2014.

To show his tribute to the late legend, Luther Vandross, he not only released the album but is also hitting roads of twenty-two different cities with the slogan ‘Always and Forever.’

Season 3 winner: Fantasia Barrino (2004)

This Grammy-winning singer has four studio albums under her belt.

In 2006, she also appeared in her own biopic, Life Is Not a Fairytale: The Fantasia Barrino Story.

As for 2018, Fantasia is touring with her band and her next performance will be held in Pigeon Point Heritage Park in Tobago.

Season 4 winner: Carrie Underwood (2005)

Carrie just might be the greatest alum of the ‘American Idol,’ with 7 Grammys, 14 ACMs, 10 BMAs and 12 AMAs under her belt.

After she sold sixty-five million records worldwide, Billboard recognized her as Country Music’s “Reigning Queen.”

She returned to ‘American Idol’ this year as a guest coach.

Season 5 winner: Taylor Hicks (2006)

Taylor is one of the highest earners among the entire ‘American Idol’ winners. 

He currently co-owns a restaurant at Saw’s Juke Joint in Birmingham, Alabama, where he occasionally performs to quench his thirst for music.

Season 6 winner: Jordin Sparks (2007)

Jordin Sparks, who has released three studio albums and seventeen music videos, is currently pursuing her acting career.

In 2010, she was cast in the Broadway musical, In the Heights, and also starred in the 2012 movie, Sparkle.

Season 7 winner: David Cook (2008)

The 2008 American Idol, David released his first album on November 2008, which was placed third on Billboard 200.

He released an EP, Chromance, on February 16, 2018 and also debuted as Charlie Price in Broadway musical, Kinky Boots, on April 3, 2018.
