Michael Mann Biography
Michael Kenneth Mann, popularly known as simply Michael Mann is an American film director, producer and screen writer. He celebrates his birthday every year on 5th of February and was born in the year 1943. He is best known for his outstanding work in movies such The Aviator, Collateral, The Insider, The Last if the Mohicans, Ali, Heat, among many others. Often listed in the Best Directors list, Mann has won a BAFTA Award, a Primetime Emmy Award and has been nominated for prestigious awards like Cannes, Academy and the British Academy of Film and Television, and others.
He was born in Chicago, Illinois, United States and was raised there for most of his early. His father was Jack Mann and his mother was Esther. Both of them were grocers. He has Jewish ancestry and Ukranian descent from his father’s side. He went to University of Wisconsin- Madison, graduating from there with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. It was there, where he found interest in philosophy, architecture and history. He revealed that his passion for films deepened as he saw Dr. Strangelove. In the mid 1960s, he moved to London and attended London Film School. He graduated from there and stayed in the United Kingdom for seven years to study film. During that time he was also working on commercials.
He shot the footage for 1968 Paris student revolt for a documentary Insurrection. The experience helped him make a short film Jaunpuri won the Jury Prize at the 1970 Cannes Film Festival. On returning back to United States, he shot the road trio documentary 17 Days Down the Line. He also got a chance to write four episodes of Starsky and Hutch in 1974. His first feature film was The Jericho Mile, a television special which won him an Emmy in 1979 for best MOW and the DGA Best Director award. He has also worked as the executive producer of Crime Story and Miami Vice. In 1981, he gave his first cinema feature with Thief. He was slowly gaining attention by then but his 1992 Last of the Mohicans rose him to an even greater height. The rest of the 90s decade gave him his became his biggest critical successes with movies such as Heat and The Insider. The latter one even got him an Oscar nomination for the best director. His 2001 movie Ali followed suit. In 2004, he produced The Aviator and left the directing for Martin Scorsese. He directed and was the executive producer of the film adaptation of Miami Vice. He wrote and directed the movie Public Enemies in 2009, for Universal Pictures. Mann is currently filming for his next movie which is yet to be titled but will be coming out in 2015.
He is married to Summer Mann. They tied the knot in 1974. Summer is his second wife. He divorced his first wife in the early 1970s. He has four children. His daughter Ami Canaan Mann is also a film producer and director. His marriage to Summer has lasted over four decades now and his bound to last life long. He seems to be enjoying his life to the fullest and is living a blissful life with his wife and kids.
