Judge Mathis :: Biography
Gregory Ellis Mathis is better known as Judge Mathis of the American arbitration based reality court show of the same name. He celebrates his birthday every year on 5th of April and was born in the year 1960. He is a retired Michigan 36th District Court, television personality and author. He has been with the reality courtroom series since 1999, where he adjudicates real life small claim arguments within a replicated courtroom set. The long running show airs five days a week and his highly viewed in America. He has also published his memoir Inner City Miracle.
He is a native of Detroit, Michigan, United States as he was born and spent most of his early life there. He was born as the youngest son to father Charles Mathis and mother Alice Lee Mathis, who worked as a nurse’s aide and housekeeper. Alice had already divorced with Charles when Greg was born, so he was raised solely by his mother. As he reached his teen age, he associated with and joined Errol Flynns, a Detroit street gang. He was arrested numerous times during the 1970s and was offered early probation because his mother was diagnosed with colon cancer. Then a family friend helped him enroll in Eastern Michigan University graduating with the B. S. in Public Administration from the Ypsilanti campus. He graduated from the University of Detroit Mercy in the year 1987. He was also a member of the fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha.
Because of his criminal past, for several years, he was denied a license to practice law. Finally, in 1995, he was elected to serve as a district court judge for Michigan's 36th District, making him the youngest person in the state to hold the post. In his five years long tenure on the bench, he was rated in the top five of all judges in the 36th District. He started his political career as an unpaid intern and became an assistant to a city council member, Clyde Cleveland. During the same time, he was admitted to the University of Detroit School of Law. He has been actively involved in politics after that. Since he started doing the arbitration based reality court room show Judge Mathis, his popularity has increased even more. The syndicated series features him adjudicating small claims disputes. The show has won a PRISM Commendation in May 2002 and an NAACP Image Award in 2004. The long running series entered its 15th season on September 9, 2013. He has a unique style of judgment making wisecracks and jokes and takes on a comedic and teasing approach. Never the less, his verdict is barely questioned as he provides a good explanation before his verdict. In addition to that, he, Mathis wrote a novel called Street Judge in September 2008 and a book called Of Being a Judge to Criminals and Such.
Mathis is a married man. He is married to Linda Reese since 1985. He met his soon to be wife, after his mother’s death. Linda was a fellow student at EMU. The couple got married without much delay and welcomed their first child, a daughter, Jade on May 1985. They have three more children, daughter Camara, born in October 1987, son Greg Jr. born in January 1989 and a second son Amir, born in July 1990. Greg seems to be enjoying his family life quite well and has proven to be a good father and husband. From the looks of it, he is very unlikely to get a divorce anytime in the future. The marriage has lasted for almost three decades and is bound to last even longer.
