Born Janine Loraine Gauntt, and better known by her stage name, Janine Turner is an American actress for the big and small screen. She was born in the year 1962 and celebrates her birthday every year on December 6. She is best known for her portrayal of Maggie O'Connell in the television series Northern Exposure. She is also known as Dr. Dana Stowe on the Lifetime original series Strong Medicine.

Turner is a native of Lincoln, Nebraska, United States of America as she was born and spent most of her early childhood there. She was welcomed to the family as the youngest daughter of Janice Loraine, who was a real estate agent, and Turner Maurice Gauntt, Jr., who was a pilot for Braniff Airways. Her father is from East Texas, while her mother is from South Texas. She has an older brother, Tim. Her family relocated to Euless, Texas, while she was still young and she grew up there. As a child, she trained in ballet, theater, tap, and started modeling from the age of 3. She was a cheer leader during her teens. On moving with her mother to study at New York's Professional Children's School, she was fortunate enough to be picked up by the famed Wilhelmina Agency as a model.

In 1978, after some commercial work, with the Wilhelmina Modeling Agency however, she returned to school in Texas and began her acting career in 1980, appearing in various episodes of Dallas. She continued with making guest appearances on several television shows throughout the 1980s before being cast as Laura Templeton on General Hospital. By 1986, she had become so frustrated with the quality of the roles she was getting that she moved to New York in order to refine her talent, studying there with Marcia Haufrecht of the The Actors Studio. With 1990 came her breakthrough role of Maggie O'Connell on Northern Exposure. She got an Emmy nomination in 1993 and consecutive Golden Globe nominations from 1992 to 1994 for her role in the series.  After her breakthrough, she appeared in the action film Cliffhanger opposite Sylvester Stallone. Turner wrote and directed a film about a strong-willed mother and her children called Trip in a Summer Dress, in 2004 and in 2006, she was appointed a member of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. In 2008, Turner's launched her book, Holding Her Head High: Inspiration from 12 Single Mothers Who Championed Their Children and Changed History and that same year, she started an eight-episode run on the NBC television series Friday Night Lights playing the role of Katie McCoy, mother of a talented high school football quarterback. On May 21, 2011, she started hosting a live two-hour talk show on conservative-oriented talk radio station KLIF (AM) in Dallas.

Talking about her personal life, Turner was once engaged to Alec Baldwin. She also dated Jerry Jones Jr., Troy Aikman, Mark Grace, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Sylvester Stallone. However, she has never been married, so there is no question of her ever having a husband or divorce. Currently, she lives on a longhorn cattle ranch outside of Dallas, Texas, with her daughter, Juliette. Her daughter, Juliette Gauntt, was born November 22, 1997. With her daughter Juliette, she began an organization called Constituting America aimed at educating Americans about the U.S. Constitution. Turner is a Republican Party and is a frequent contributor to candidates and organizations. She even spoke at the 2012 Republican National Convention.
