Gerard Butler Biography
Gerard James Butler is a Scottish actor for the film, stage, and television. He was born on 13 November 1969. Previously a trained lawyer, he turned to acting in the mid-1990s with several small roles in movies, followed with steady work on television. With the arrival of 2000s decade, his career slowly came to rise. Butler’s portrayal of André Marek in the 2003 adaptation of Michael Crichton's Timeline gave him recognition. He garnered lots of critical acclaim for his work as the lead in Joel Schumacher's 2004 film adaptation of the musical The Phantom of the Opera. In the film 300, his portrayal of King Leonidas gave him worldwide fame. Since then, he has appeared in numerous successful movies such as P.S. I Love You (2007), RocknRolla (2008), Nim's Island (2008), Law Abiding Citizen (2009), Gamer (2009), The Ugly Truth (2009), The Bounty Hunter (2010), and Olympus Has Fallen (2013). He also voiced Stoick in How to Train Your Dragon (2010) and How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014).
Butler is a native of Paisley in Renfrewshire, Scotland, as he was born and spent most of his early lie there. He was welcomed to the family as the youngest of three children of Margaret and Edward Butler, a bookmaker. He belongs to a Catholic family of Irish descent. When he was six months old, his family moved to Montreal, Quebec, but his mother returned to Scotland with him, nine months later, after her marriage broke down. He was head boy at St Mirin's & St Margaret's High School in Paisley studied law at the University of Glasgow. As a teenager, he attended Scottish Youth Theatre. During his time at Glasgow University, he became the President of the university law society and also sang in a rock band called Speed. Before his final year of law school, he took a year off to live in California and returned to Scotland to finish his final year at law school.
After graduating, he won a position as a trainee lawyer at an Edinburgh law firm and just a week before he qualified as a lawyer, he was fired, because of his lifestyle. Butler moved to London, at the age of 25 to pursue his dream of becoming famous but unable to win any acting roles immediately, he as a waiter, a telemarketer and a demonstrator of how toys work at fairs. He debuted into movies in 1997 with Mrs. Brown and continued with small roles. In 2000, he landed his two breakthrough roles, the first being Attila the Hun in the American TV miniseries Attila and as Dracula in Dracula 2000. Then he appeared in Reign of Fire (2002), Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003) and Timeline (2003). Other projects that followed include Dear Frankie (2005), The Game of Their Lives (2005) and Beowulf & Grendel (2005). In 2007, he starred as Spartan King Leonidas in the movie 300. In 2007, he appeared in Butterfly on a Wheel and P.S. I Love You. His other films include Nim’s Island, Gamer, The Ugly Truth, Law Abiding Citizen, The Bounty Hunter and RocknRolla.
