Ernie Johnson :: Biography
An active and passionate man also known for his analystic nature for sports, Ernest Johnson, Jr, commonly known as Ernie Johnson, is a well-known sportscaster for the famed Turner Sports. A versatile reporter and host, Johnson is the currently preferred lead Tv-voice for the ongoing for Major League Baseball on the TBS network. As a host, he is active in the TNT network as covering the “Inside the NBA” show and has equally contributing in the coverage of “NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament” for his current station Turner and the CBS Sports as well. Born on August the 7th, 1956, Johnson is also the studio host to pregame and the halftime show of the TNT feature of every NBA match.
At the beginning of his career, Johnson, took up his first job of his career that of a sports news director for WAGQ-FM, a local radio station of Athens while still a student studing at University of Georgia. After his graduation from the University with a B.A degree in journalism, he decided to extend his career in broadcasting and joined the WMAZ-TV in the city of Macon. Again the aspiration to become great took its toll on him and he made a move to work and join WSPA-TV as a news reporter. It, like other jobs he took, did not last long for he did hold those jobs till 1989, as prior to joining Turner Sports while quitting his job as a WSB-TV’s weekend reporter ans an anchor as well. His father, Ernie Johnson Sr. who was a former pitcher of MLB, encouraged him to focus his skills on calling the Braves baseball games for the FSN South network. Ernie used to present a popular part of his hosting show named ‘E.J.'s Neat-O Stat of the Night,’ which had problems of sponsorship and hence had the sign stating ‘Your logo here’ for the part. As in the month of May 2007, did the show get its official sponsor “vitamin water” as they took a step for the segment which later got replaced by Panasonic in 2008. Even Suzuki took interest in Johnson’s talent and did every bit of their part to flourish the show. For the 2008 NBA Playoffs, his segments got the presentation from vitamin water and Gleico as well.
As a multi-talented man that he is, Johnson did not fall behind in being the play-by-play announcer of the PGA Tour coverage also of TNT network. Not only this, Johnson was an active studio host for the coverage part of their college football. It is in 2002 that Johnson got appreciated for his hard-work as being the co-winner of Sports Emmy Award for the category, Outstanding Sports Personality, Studio Host, where he had a tie with Bob Costas. It was the first time Johnson had been nominated for a Sports Emmy. A calm and determined Johnson won the award for the second time, this time fully on his name, and snapping the six-year stranglehold of Costas' on that very award.
A near perfect professional life came with a price in the personal one for Johnson. He got diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, one distinctive cancer category in 2003, and was in Chemo treatments as actively continuing to host the show “Inside the NBA “. Johnson along with his wife, Cheryl who is a professional counselor having the license now reside in Braselton, Georgia. The couple are said to be fond of children as they have six children, two their own and four adopted either from foster care or different countries. The children include two sons and four daughters. This inspirational man has no citings of his height in any of his bios.
A child with one unmatched passion for sports that took him to the heights of the success that he could ever have imagined is Ernie Johnson. The fulfillment of the dream of life came as he could cover the moments of the NBA which was the much needed pole of support of his career. By that Johnson now has established a reputation like no other in the field of sport coverage and he does not demand high salary as well.
