Dolph Lundgren :: Biography
Best known for his action hero image, Dolph Lundgren is a Swedish actor, martial artist and director. He was born on 3rd of November, 1957 as Hans Lundgren. He landed his breakthrough with the 1985 movie Rocky IV as Ivan Drago. He is most known for his portrayal of He-Man in the movie Masters of the Universe and other of his notable movies include The Punisher, Dark Angel, Showdown in Little Tokyo, Universal Soldier, Joshua Tree, Johnny Mnemonic, Blackjack, Icarus, and many more. After a long break, he returned to the big screen with The Expendables in 2010 and has been reprising his role as Gunner Jensen in The Expendables 2 in 2012 and The Expendables 3 in 2014.
He was born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden by Sigrid Birgitta, a language teacher, and Karl Johan Hugo Lundgren, an economist and engineer for the Swedish government. He has two sisters and an older brother. During an interview, Lundgren recalled having rough childhood because of his physically abusive father who vented his anger on his wife and eldest son. Because of that, Dolph developed a desire to participate in heavy contact sports such as boxing and karate. After completing his high school in Sweden, he went to America for further education. He received a degree in chemistry from Washington State University in 1976, a degree in chemical engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm in the early 1980s, then a Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Sydney in Sydney, Australia in 1982. Lundgren holds a rank of 3rd dan black belt in Kyokushin Karate and was European champion in 1980 and 1981. During his time at Sydney, the Jamaican singer Grace Jones hired him as a bodyguard. They began a relationship and moved together to New York City, where he worked as a model and bouncer at a Manhattan nightclub called The Limelight. Jones got him his first role as a KGB henchman in the James Bond movie A View to a Kill.
He left his engineering degree behind to pursue a career in acting. He auditioned for and ultimately landed the role of Ivan Drago in Rocky IV opposite Sylvester Stallone in 1985. The movie thus turned him into an action hero and there was no looking back after that. After Rocky IV, he did a number of other action movies like Masters of Universe, Red Scorpion, The Punisher, I Come in Peace, Cover Up, Showdown in Little Tokyo, Universal Soldier, Joshua Tree, Pentathlon, Men of War, The Shooter, Silent Trigger, The Peacekeeper, The Minion, Bridge of Dragons and Jill Rips. He kept on doing even greater number of action movies in the 2000s decade, not bothering about being shammed by the critics for having little or no acting skills.
During the early 80s, Lundgren had relationship with the Jamaican singer Grace Jones. He was also dating model Paula Barbieri. In 1994, he married a jewelry designer and fashion stylist, Anette Qviberg and started living in Marbella. He has two daughters, Ida Sigrid Lundgren (b. 29 April 1996) and Greta Eveline Lundgren (b. November 2001) with his wife Anette. However, Dolph’s marriage to Anette did not last more than one and a half decade and by 2011, they had already divorced. Currently, Dolph is said to be seeing someone. His new girlfriend is Jenny Sandersson and he has moved back to Los Angeles with her. He has so far escaped the rumors of him being gay.
