David Thewlis ~ Biography
David Thewlis is an English actor for the film and stage. He celebrates his birthday every year on March 20, and was born in the year 1963. His name at birth was David Wheeler, but is better known by his stage name David Thewlis. He is most known for his portrayal of Remus Lupin in the famous Harry Potter film franchise. Besides that, he is also known for his outstanding performances in movies such as Timeline, The Omen, Kingdom of Heaven, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, War Horse and London Boulevard. His breakthrough role came with the 1993 movie Naked.
He was born in Blackpool, Lancashire, United Kingdom as the middle child to father Alec Raymond Wheeler and mother Maureen Thewlis. His father owned a shop which sold paint and wallpaper in the winter and toys in the summer. Both of his parents worked at the shop. He completed his high school from Highfield High School in Marton, Blackpool. By then he had already developed a passion for acting and therefore enrolled in the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He graduated from there in 1984 and went for registration at the actor’s union. The stage name David Wheeler was already taken so he chose to use David Thewlis as his stage name. During his teenage years, he was a member of the band called QED and later played guitars for the punk rock band Door 66.
He kicked start his acting career with a small role in the 1980s sitcom Up the Elephant and Round the Castle. In 1993, he landed a major role in the movie Naked and that became his breakthrough role. For his outstanding performance in the movie, he was named the best actor by the Cannes Film Festival, London Film Critics Circle, New York Film Critics’ Circle, Evening Standard and National Society of Film Critics (U.S.). Throughout the 90s, he appeared in numerous films such as Total Eclipse, Black Beauty, Dragonheart, Seven Years in Tibet, Clov, Divorcing Jack, Gangster No. 1 and many others. He auditioned for the Harry Potter for the role of Quirrel, but was given the role of Professor Remus John Lupin instead, in the third movie of the series. The role became his most commercially successful role and he reprised his role for the other four movies of the franchise. His recent work can be seen in the movies The Zero Theorem, The Fifth Estate, RED 2 and Separate We Come, Separate We Go. He has tried his hands at writing too and wrote the novel called The Late Hector Kipling, which was published in 2007.
Talking about his personal life, he was once married to director Sara Sugarman. They married in the year 1992 and had a divorce just two years later in 1994. Then he got into a relationship with Kate Hardie for a short time. He dated actress Anna Friel in 2001. She was pregnant with is child and gave birth to their daughter named Gracie Ellen Mary Thewlis on July 9, 2005. Before they could take the relationship any further, they decided to separate in 2010, after almost a decade together. The talented actor has also been blessed with a handsome face and great height.
