Carmen Maura Biography
Carmen Maura was born in the year 1945 and celebrates her birthday on September 15, every year. She is a Spanish actress for the film, television and stage. Her name at birth was Carmen García Maura and is popularly known by her stage name simply, Carmen Maura. She is best known for her collaboration work with the famous Spanish film director Pedro Almodóvar. She has done a notable work in the movies such as Volver, La comunidad, Women on the Verge of Nervous Breakdown, Les femmed du 6e ètage and many others.
She is a native of Madrid, Spain as she was born and raised there. Her mother was Carmen Maura Arenzana and her father was Salvador Garcia Santa-Cruz. Born to an aristocratic family, her great-grandfather lived in the Palace of Arenzana in Madrid, currently the embassy of France and was the Count of Fuente Nueva de Arenzana, and her great grandfather from her mother´s side was Bartolome Maura Montaner, the noted artist. She went to École de Beaux-Arts in Paris, France to study philosophy and literature.
She got into the entertainment industry, staring her career as a cabaret singer. She launched her acting career with the release of the 1970 movie The Man in Hiding. Following its success, she had major role in the movie Tigres de papel, which came out in 1977. In the year 1980, she got her first film with Pedro Almodóvar titled Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del montón. Her performance had impressed the director so much that he cast her in five more films in the 1980s only. However, as the movie Women on the Verge of Nervous Breakdown released, the relationship between Pedro and Carmen fell apart and they did not work together for more than a decade. The fall of their relationship gave her a chance to do some of the most successful Spanish films like Ay Carmela, How to Be Miserable and Enjoy it and Between Heaven and Earth.The year 2006 was a good year for both as they joined forces again to work in the movie Volver, which means Return in Spanish symbolizing Maura’s return to Pedro’s movies. She was voted the best actress at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival for her outstanding performance in the film. Another of her appreciated role was of a transgender in the movie Law of Desire, again by Almodóvar. Despite playing dramatic roles, she is also known for her comedic roles in movies like Dear Nanny, Coarse Salt and Sé infiel y no mires con quién. For her notable contribution to the Spanish Film industry, she has been honored with numerous awards and accolades. Her recent work can be seen in the movies Las Brujas de Zugarramurdi, Paulette, Le Mac, Chicas and Tetro, among others.
Maura was once married to Francisco Forteza. Her then-husband was a lawyer. She has two children with him, a daughter Carmen and a son Pablo. They had tied the knot in the year 1964. The relationship did not last more than six years and they separated with a divorce in 1970. Following the breakdown of their relationship, she had a brief affair with Fernando Colomo. The affair didn’t get much serious and they soon separated, but despite that, they remain close friends. Although she is fluent in French and speaks English well, she usually does her interviews in her native language.
