Terrence Dashon Howard is an American actor for the film and television and singer. He was born in 1969 and celebrates his birthday on March 11 every year. His first major role was in the 1995 film Mr. Holland's Opus. With the film, he broke into the mainstream between 2004 and 2006 with a succession of film and television roles. For his performance in the movie Hustle & Flow, he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. His other prominent roles can be found in movies such as Crash, Winnie, Four Brothers, Ray, Iron Man, Lackawanna Blues, Get Rich or Die Tryin', August Rush, Idlewild, and The Brave One. In September 2008, his debut album Shine Through It was released.

Howard is a native of Chicago, Illinois, United States of America but spent most of his early life in Cleveland, Ohio. He was welcomed to the family as the son of Anita Jeanine Williams and Tyrone Howard. Minnie Gentry, his maternal great-grandmother, was a stage actress, so were his mother and uncles. Both of his parents were African American, and also had European American lineage. His father was involved in the 1971 Santa Line Slaying and served eleven months in prison on manslaughter charges after stabbing another man to death. Howard freed himself from his parents, at the young age of 16, and was put on welfare. When he was 18, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting. Wanting to become a science teacher, Howard enrolled at the Pratt Institute in New York but never completed his education and instead joined his brother on an audition for The Cosby Show, winning the role.

Howard’s first role in the entertainment world came as he portrayed Jackie Jackson in the ABC miniseries, The Jacksons: An American Dream. His breakthrough role came three years later in 1995 with Mr. Holland's Opus. Howard has also worked as a film producer, receiving such a credit for the film Pride. As of 2008, Howard hosts the PBS' series Independent Lens. In 2008, he debuted into Broadway, playing the role of Brick in Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, directed by Debbie Allen. During rehearsals it was said that he allegedly attacked and seriously injured musical composer Tex Allen (brother of the director), and in October 2008, Allen filed a $5 million lawsuit against Howard. In 2009, he starred in the movie Fighting. On July 30, 2010, it was reported that Howard joined the cast of the new Law & Order: Los Angeles installment of the Law & Order franchise, wherein he will play Deputy District Attorney Joe Dekker. In 2011, Howard portrayed Nelson Mandela in Winnie Mandela. He is said to be a part of two upcoming Fox television shows, Empire and Wayward Pines. In the former he will play a hip-hop mogul who discovers he is dying and must ensure the survival of his music empire and in the latter series he will be cast alongside Matt Dillon, Melissa Leo, and Juliette Lewis.

Howard was married to Lori McCommas for 14 years. They have three children: Aubrey, Heaven and Hunter. Howard divorced with his first wife in 2003 and remarried again in 2005, but have since separated. Howard married his girlfriend Michelle Ghent in a secret ceremony in January 2010. She is a commercial production employee. On February 2, 2011, it was reported that she had filed for divorce. Howard became a grandfather for the first time when his daughter Aubrey and her husband welcomed their first child, in December 2012.
