Stephen J. Dillane is an English actor for the big and small screen and theater. He was born in the year 1956 and celebrates his birthday every year on 30 November. He is most popular for his roles as Stannis Baratheon in Game of Thrones, Glen Foy in Goal!, Leonard Woolf in The Hours, and American politician Thomas Jefferson in the HBO miniseries John Adams. Dillane is an accomplished theatre actor as well and won a Tony Award for his lead performance in Tom Stoppard's play The Real Thing.

Dillane is a native of Kensington, London, as he was born and spent most of his early life there.  He was welcomed to the family of an English mother, Bridget, and an Australian surgeon father, Dr. John Dillane. He has a younger brother, Richard, who is also an actor. Upon graduation from the University of Exeter, he became a journalist for the Croydon Advertiser. However, unsatisfied with his career, he gave up journalism for acting and entered the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Dillane is a distinguished stage actor. His notable roles include Archer in The Beaux' Stratagem (1989), Prior Walter in Angels in America (1993), Hamlet (1994), Clov in Samuel Beckett's Endgame (1996), Uncle Vanya (1998), Henry in Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing (2000), The Coast of Utopia (2002), and a one-man version of Macbeth (2005). Onscreen, he is probably best known for his role of Horatio in the 1990 film adaptation of Hamlet. He is also famous for his portrayal of Leonard Woolf in The Hours (2002), legendary English professional golfer Harry Vardon in The Greatest Game Ever Played (2005) and Glen Foy in the Goal! trilogy. In July 2011, he joined the cast of the hit series, Game of Thrones, as Stannis Baratheon. In 2012, he played Rupert Keel, head of the private security company organisation Byzantium, in the television series Hunted. The same year, he starred in the British independent film Papadopoulos & Sons, playing the role of a successful entrepreneur, Harry Papadopoulos, who rediscovers his life after being forced to start again from nothing following a banking crisis. His real-life son, Frank Dillane, plays his reel life son in the film. In January 2013, it was reported that he had been cast as the male lead in the Sky Atlantic series The Tunnel.
