The versatile and talented Scottie Pippen is an American retired basketball player. He spent seventeen years in the NBA league, twelve years for Chicago Bulls featuring in their six NBA championship run. He has retired as a player since 2008 but is closely associated with the sport in various ways. Born on September 2, 1965 in Hamburg, Arkansas in the United States as the twelfth to the parents Ethel and Preston, he was names Scottie Maurine Pippen. His father worked at a paper mill. He attended Hamburg High School. He enjoyed baseball, football and basketball during his early days. His basketball idol was Julius Erving. He led Hamburg School team to regional level playoffs and also made to all conference team. Upon high school graduation he had expected a basketball scholarship but wasn’t fortunate enough. He also worked as a welder to pay his school fees.
An interesting matter is that, his basketball career began as a student manager of the basketball team of the University of Central Arkansas. He sharpened his skills and grew in height during four stay at UCA. Eventually he appeared as a player. Versatile Pippen playing at all five positions led his team UCA Bears to win the conference championships and he was voted NAIA- All American team twice. After making a good impression at 1987 pre-draft at NBA tryouts, he was taken by Chicago Bulls following a deal with Seattle Supersonics. Although he started his Bulls career spending most of his time on the bench, Pippen refined his skills under the instruction and motivation of basketball legend Michael Jordan. Soon he was in the starting lineup.
Pippen made a fantastic pair with Jordan, pushing Bulls to the Conference Finals in 1989 and 1990, though lost both the finals to Detroit Pistons. He made his entry at NBA All Star in 1990. Multidimensional Pippen with his scoring, defenses and assists became an essential member in the Bulls’ three consecutive NBA title string from 1991 through 1993. He was often said to be shadowed under Jordan. Playing as small forward he remained second on team’s scoring and rebounds, displayed his defensive skills leading the team in block shots and assists. When Jordan was a temporary retirement in 1994/95, he moved out of “the shadow” and led the Bulls. During the period, in his 4th All-Star game, he scored 29 to claim the prestige of Most Valuable Player. He was named to NBA-All Defensive First Team as well as All-NBA First Team.
With the return of Jordan in 1995-96 season, his superb career blossomed as the pair of sneakers led the team to NBA Championship that season. Their winning string continued, with Bulls clinching the title for next two seasons as well. The period was a supreme era for Bulls with the record of 72-10, the best in NBA history.
Along with the departure of coach Phil Jackson and Michael Jordan, Pippen Houston Rockets in 1999. But due hostile relation with teammates it was uncomfortable for him and couldn’t give his best. Eventually Pippen was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers. He helped them to the Western Conference Finals. He played for Portland for four seasons. In the year 2003, he returned to Chicago Bulls and helped them to reach playoffs. Although he got injured he mentored the upcoming stars to better their performance. After that he didn’t continue in the NBA but played a few matches for Torpan Pojat and Sundsvall Dragons in 2008.
During his NBA career he made to NBA-All Defensive First team for eight years in a row, was named NBA All Star six times, All NBA First Team thrice, and other honors. He holds the records of most steals in playoffs,395. He was the second player to top all five categories i.e. scoring, rebounding , assists, steals and block shots, for an NBA team.
Apart from NBA career he was also the member of US Olympic “Dream Team” which won gold medals in 1992 and 1996.he was also inducted to Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. He was referred in several songs and portrayed on screen too. He has been frequently quoted as “one of the greatest power forwards of all time”.
