Maurice Richard Povich, better known by his stage name Maury Povich is an American actor, producer and television presenter. He was born in the year 1939 and celebrates his birthday on January 17 every year. He is most known as the host of the popular tabloid talk show Maury.
He was born in Washington, D.C., United States spent most of his early life there. His father, Shirley Povich was a sports writer for Washington post and his mother was Ethyl. He was born as the middle child into a Jewish family, follows Judaism as his religion and is an American by nationality. To receive his high school education, he went to Landon School, graduating in 1957. Then, he went to University of Pennsylvania. He graduated from there with a Bachelor’s degree in television journalism.
He started his career in 1962 as a reporter and marketer at a Washington, D.C. radio station WWDC. He switched on to television and started working for WWTC-TV in 1966 and co-hosted the station’s most popular show called Panorama. That gained him wide recognition. Later he worked as news anchor at various stations until the early 80s. In 1986, he was hired as the host of A Current Affair for the Metromedia TV station group. He hosted the show until 1990 and left it to host The Maury Povich Show, by the Paramount Television. During that time, he also served as the president of the New York chapter of the National Television Academy. He founded his own production company MoPo Productions the same year. The production of the show was taken over by GE and also named it as simply Maury. He was also the host of the short-lived revival of the popular game show Twenty One on NBC in January 2000. He launched a weekly print newspaper Flathead Beacon in May 2007. As an actor, he has appeared on the popular sitcom How I Met Your Mother and in the movie Madea’s Big Happy Family.
About his personal life, he was once married to Phyllis Minkoff. They had married in 1962 and separated after 17 years of marriage in the year 1979. They have two children, both daughters, Susan and Amy. Then in 1984, after dating for some time, he got married to Connie Chung. His wife is a fellow news anchor whom he had met while hosting the news program Weekends with Maury and Connie for MSNBC. Being an advocate of adoption, the couple adopted a son Matthew Jay Povich in 1995. He is a member of the Eagle Bend Golf Club and plays golf during his free time.
