John Singleton is an American film director, screenwriter, and producer. He was born as John Daniel Singleton in the year 1968 and celebrates his birthday on January 6 every year. He is best known for directing the 1991 movie Boyz n the Hood. Besides that, his notable work can be seen in some of his other movies such as Higher Learning, Poetic Justice, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Shaft, Four Brothers and Abduction.

Singleton is a native of South Los Angeles, California as he was born and spent most of his early life there. He was welcomed to the family as the son of Sheila Ward-Johnson, who worked as a company sales executive at a pharmaceutical company, and Danny Singleton, who was a real estate agent, financial planner, and mortgage broker. He went to Pasadena City College and then attended the USC School of Cinematic Arts. He graduated from USC in 1990 was enrolled in the University of Southern California's Filmic Writing program under Margaret Mehring, designed to take students directly into the Hollywood system as proficient writer/directors.

He started his professional career in 1991 with the debut movie Boyz n the Hood. His first movie earned lots of critical acclaims and won an Academy Award nods for Best Screenplay and Director, making him the first African-American to be nominated for the award and the youngest person ever nominated for Best Director. In the year 1997, his movie Rosewood was entered into the 47th Berlin International Film Festival. In addition to this, his other film Baby Boy helped establish him as a top of the line director of drama. Later, he turned to making action movies which garnered mixed reviews. Singleton teamed with Craig Brewer in 2005, and financed the independent film, Hustle and Flow. In 2013 it was announced that John would be the directing the 2Pac biography film. Besides movies, he also directed the video for Michael Jackson's 1991 single "Remember The Time", starring actor Eddie Murphy.

Talking about his personal life, John married Ghanaian actress Akosua Gyamama Busia on October 12, 1996. His wife is the daughter of Ghana's second Prime Minister Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia. The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named Hadar Singleton on April 3, 1997. She has appeared in Tears of the Sun (2003) and other productions. Singleton also has a daughter named Justice Maya who was born on October 17, 1992, with his old flame Tosha Lewis, as well as a son named Maasai Mohandas Singleton who was born April 3, 1994. He has six children altogether.
