Joan Rivers is an American actress, writer, comedian, television host and producer. She was born in the year 1933 as Joan Alexandra Molinsky and celebrates her birthday on 8th of June every year. She is most known for being the host of Fashion Police, an E! celebrity fashion show. She is equally known for her starring role in the reality series Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best? with her daughter Melissa Rivers. Since March 2013, she has been hosting and producing the online weekly talk show on YouTube titled In Bed with Joan. She won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host for her show The Joan Rivers Show but has often been criticized for her insulting style as a result of which, she often finds herself in controversies. She has written numerous humor books and a memoir.
She was born in Brooklyn, New York, United States as the daughter to Russian Jewish immigrants Beatrice and Meyer C. Molinsky. To receive her high school education, she went to Connecticut College from 1950 to 1952. Then she attended Barnard College and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1954 with a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in English literature and anthropology. Before her work in the entertainment industry she worked different jobs like fashion consultant, tour guide, writer and proofreader.
She took her first step into the entertainment industry with a short run play Driftwood in 1950s. During that time, she also performed in numerous comedy clubs. She appeared on the popular show The Tonight Show as a guest and reappeared on February 17, 1965. She had a minor role in The Swimmer and had her first show That Show, a short lived syndicated daytime talk show. She released two comedy albums in mid 60s called Rivers Presents Mr. Phyllis & Other Funny Stories and The Next to Last Joan Rivers Album. In 1983, she released another comedy album What Becomes a Semi-Legend Most? which earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album. The following year she came out with a humor book The Life and Hard Times of Heidi Abramowitz. In 1986, the Fox Television Network gave her a show The Late Night Show Starring Joan Rivers which infuriated her mentor Johnny Carson because the time the show aired was same as his show. She challenged the Fox executives and as result of which both her and her husband Edgar Rosenberg were fired. Three months, her husband committed suicide and she blamed Fox for it. She hosted The Joan Rivers Show, which won her a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host in 1990. Along with her daughter Melissa, she hosted E! entertainment program. On June 30, 2004, Joan announced that they, were leaving E! Entertainment for the TV Guide Channel. She appeared on several TV, film and stage productions during 2000s. Currently, she co-hosts Fashion Police by E! since September 10, 2010.
She has received many criticisms for making insulting comments. Controversy surrounded her when she made jokes on Adele’s weight. She also tried to humor serious issues such as the Holocaust, victims of Ariel Castro kidnappings, miscarriage of Lindsay Lohan. In a recent controversy, she told the CNN reporter Fredricka Whitfield that president Obama was gay and his wife Michelle was a transgender. She has several quotes and one said that she was a dyke and was proud of it.
She married James Sanger in 1955 and divorced six months later. She married her second husband Edgar Rosenberg on July 15, 1965 who committed suicide in 1987. She bore him a daughter, Melissa. She had extra marital affairs with Gabriel Dell and Robert Mitchum. She has done numerous plastic surgery to keep up her youth even at this age.
