He also played important role during the period of war. Stewart was promoted to ‘Brigadier General’ in the year 1959. He took retirement from Air Force in 1968. After the retirement, he made his comeback in acting career in Frank Capra production ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’. For his exceptional performance, he even gained five Academy Awards nomination. Later in 1947 he appeared in comedy movie ‘Magic Town’ but the movie failed to get positive response at box office. His other noticeable role came in 1949 movie ‘Malaya’. During the early period of 1960s, he starred in three John Ford movies ‘Two Rode Together’, ‘The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance’ and ‘The Searchers’. During the last phase of acting career, he supplied his voice for the movie ‘An American Tail: Fievel Goes West’.

Significance to his personal life, the well-known movie persona got married to former model ‘Gloria Hatrick McLean’ on 9th August. 1949. He adopted sons named ‘Michael’ and ‘Ronald’ after getting married to wife Gloria. The couple had a great time with each other until Gloria left the world on 16th February, 1994. From his marital relation with Gloria, he has twin daughters named ‘Judy’ and ‘Kelly’. The talented actor was admitted to hospital for irregular heartbeat in 1997.
