Best known as the host of CBS’s game show The Price Is Right, Bob Barker is an American television personality. He was born as Robert William Barker on December 12, 1923. He hosted The Price Is Right for thirty five years making it the longest-running daytime game show in the history of North American television. He also served as the host of Truth or Consequences for 18 years starting from 1956. He won 19 Emmy Awards in total, 14 for Outstanding Game Show Host.
He was born in Darrington, Washington but was raised on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. His mother was a school teacher and his father Byron John Barker was a foreman on the electrical high line in Washington. His father died in 1929 and his mother got married subsequently and moved along with the family to Springfield, Missouri. He graduated in 1941 from Central High School and went to Drury College, now University. He served as a fighter pilot in the U.S Navy during the World War II. After the war was over, he got back to college and graduated summa cum laude with an economics degree.
He started off his career in media at KTTS-FM Radio in Springfield, while still at college. On leaving Springfield, he got another radio job in Florida. To pursue his career in broadcasting he made a move to California in 1950. He got his own radio show The Bob Barker Show. The show ran for six years. He was also hosting an audience participation game show for KNX (AM) which caught the attention of the game show producer Ralph Edwards. Then, on December 31, 1956, he was cast as the host of Truth or Consequences. The program ran until 1974. He then became the host of NBC’s End of the Rainbow (1957-1958) and The Family Game (1967). He also hosted Simon Says (1971), That’s My Line (1980-81) before hosting the CBS revival of The Price Is Right on September 4, 1972. He became the show’s executive producer in 1988, after the original executive producer died. Barker hosted the game show for the last time on June 6, 2007. He has appeared on the show as a guest to promote his autobiography Priceless Memories and to celebrate his 90th birthday, aired on December 12, 2013. He has also worked in movies and TV series.
Bob was married to his high school sweetheart Dorothy Jo Gideon in 1945. His wife, however, did not live long and died of lung cancer in 1981. He did not remarry but has been linked to several women. He has not been able to keep him away from controversies. His fellow worker Dian Parkinson filed a lawsuit against him in 1994, alleging him of sexual harassment, but later dropped the lawsuit.
