The Disney legend, Annette Funicello, was a famous American actress and singer. She was born on October 22, 1942. Her full name was Annette Joanne Funicello. She started her career at the age of 12, as a child artist. She gained much fame for being one of the most popular Mousekeeters on the original Mickey Mouse Club. By her teenage years, she had established herself as a successful singer and had pop singles such as Pineapple Princess, O Dio Mio and Tall Paul. She is an equally successful actress of the mid 1960s. She announced in 1992 that she has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She battled with the disease for two decades and died on April 8, 2013 of complications from the disease. She was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame for motion pictures on September 14, 1993.
She was born in Utica, New York, Unites States to mother Virginia Jeanne (neé Albano) and Joseph Funicello. Her parents were Italian Americans. She was raised as a Catholic. She moved to Southern California with her family when she was four years old. She studied ballet as a young girl. Besides these, not much is known about her early life and education.
She was spotted by Walt Disney when she was performing as the Swan Queen in Swan Lake, in 1955 at the age of 12. Then she was cast as the last of the 24 original Mousekeeters. She gained so much fame after that and became America’s sweetheart. She also starred in several serials like Adventure in Dairyland, Spin and Marty serials, Walt Disney Presents: Annette and the latter one launched her singing career with the song How Will I Know My Love. She did TV roles for Disney like The Horsemasters, Elfego Baca and Zorro and did movies by the Disney Production such as The Misadventures of Merlin Jones, The Shaggy Dog, The Monkey’s Uncle and Babes in Toyland. Through Disney’s recording contract, she released more songs and sang live at Disneyland. Then she moved on from her teen idol image to being a beach girl with roles in beach movies like Beach Party (1963), Bikini Beach (1964), How to Stuff a Wild Bikini (1965), among others. She published her autobiography A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes: My Story in 1994 which was adapted into a TV movie. She tried her hands at business and produced a line of teddy bears for the Annette Funicello Collectible Bear Company and had a line of her own fragrance Cello, by Annette.
Her first husband was Jack Gilardi. She married him on 1965 and has three children with him, Gina, Jack Jr. and Jason. They got a divorce in 1981. Then she was married to Gren Holt in 1986. He was a racing horse trainer and breeder. She lived with him in a ranch south of Shafter, California until her death on April 8, 2013. The famous singer Paula Anka had a crush on her and its said that he had written the song Puppy Love about his romance with her.
