Alex Winter is an English-American actor, film director and screenwriter. He was born as Alexander Ross Winter in the year 1965 and celebrates his birthday on 17th of July every year. He is best known for his portrayal of Bill S. Preston Esq. in the 1989 movie Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and its sequel Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey in 1991. He is also famous for his role of Marko in the 1987 cult classic The Lost Boys. As a screen writer and director, he is known for co-writing, co-directing and starring in the 1993 movie Freaked.
He is a native of London, United Kingdom as he was born and spent most of his early life there. His mother, Gregg Mayer, was a former Martha Graham dancer born in New York and the founder of a modern dance company in London in the mid-1960s and his father was, Ross Albert Winter, was an Australian and danced with his wife’s troupe. Alex received an early training in dance and was five when his family moved to Missouri. There, his father ran the Mid-American Dance Company, while his mother taught dance at Washington University in St. Louis. He is a Jewish by religion and holds dual citizenship of the United Kingdom and United States of America.
In order to pursue a career in acting, Alex moved to New York City in 1978. His earliest roles were as an actor on and off Broadway. In 1983, he enrolled at the Film School at New York University where, he met fellow aspiring filmmaker Tom Stern. The two collaborated on a number of 16mm short films that inspired Andy Samberg of Saturday Night Live fame to create his digital shorts. After finishing NYU film school, he along with Tom Stern moved out to Hollywood, where they wrote and directed a number of short films and music videos. Winter continued his work as an actor and received notable roles in big productions. Winter had his first taste of international success as he co-starred as Bill S. Preston in the 1989 smash-hit comedy Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and reprised his role for the 1991 sequel, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey. Following its success, Winter, Tom Stern and Tim Burns were hired to develop a sketch comedy show for MTV and the result was The Idiot Box, which again was a huge success. Winter, Stern and Burns later made a movie in 1993 called Freaked and went on to become a cult favorite. Besides his work in the U.S., Winter directs music videos and commercials in London. After a 14 year long hiatus from acting, Winter returned to his roots to do a guest spot on the crime series Bones in 2007. In April 2011, Winter's Bill & Ted co-star Keanu Reeves confirmed that a third chapter of the film series was soon to be made and is still in progress.
Alex was once married to Sonya Dawson. They tied the knot in the year 1995 but their relationship did not last much longer and they soon separated with a divorce. He has a son, Leory, born in 1998, with her. After Sonya, Ramsey Ann Naito came in his life. They dated for some time before marrying in the year 2010. He has a child with her as well. The couple seems to be much in love and from the looks of it divorce is out of the picture for many years to come.
