Canadian singer, Avril Lavigne released her first song, Head Above Water, on Wednesday after a five-year hiatus. In the heart-wrenching ballad, she detailed her health struggles with Lyme disease of which she was diagnosed in 2014.

New Song and Lyme Disease

During an interview with PEOPLE, she shared how the idea of the song evoked and led her to go for an album. She said in a statement, “One night, I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die. My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed ‘God, please help to keep my head above the water.’ In that moment, the songwriting of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on.”

The untitled album will be produced by Stephan Moccio, who also produced Head Above Water. In August, Avril announced that she was working on a music video and also shared behind the scenes clips on social media.

The hard work that she has put on has really paid off well as she has been getting amazing responses from her fans. She released her self-titled album in November 2013, and its single Here’s to Never Growing Up was an international success.

After being diagnosed with the tick-borne illness, she has been actively working with individuals with Lyme disease. She is supporting people through her self-titled non-profitable organization, which was founded in 2010.
