The private liberal arts college of the United States Wesleyan University was founded in 1831. This college is well-known for providing excellence in the academic and co-curricular programs. This college is only Baccalaureate College of the nation which gives emphasis on the undergraduate instruction in Arts and Science. Weslayan was founded as an all-male Methodist college in the year 1831. The first president of this college was appointed as Willbur Fisk. It was established as an independent institution. it has maintained larger library collection with comprehensive science buildings which is devoted exclusively to the undergraduate science instruction. Initially the number of students joining this college was about 300 to 1910. With the increment in its facility, the number of the students increased from 800 to 1960. In the year 1872, it became one of the first U.S. colleges which allowed small number of female students to attend the college. However, in 1909 the board of trustees stopped admitting women as undergraduates. In 1937, the college became an independent of Methodist church. The president ‘Victor Lloyd Butterfield’ started an ambitious program to reorganize the University in the late period of 1950s. Victor divided the colleges into seven smaller residential colleges forming their own faculty and centralized graduate studies. He also included the doctoral programs and a Center for Advanced Studies. Initially there were three established three residential colleges on Foss Hill and laer added more residential colleges.

The college occupies with a 360 acre land with more than 340 buildings. Prior this college was established in 1831, it already had two buildings ‘North College’ and ‘South College’ built in 1825. These buildings were constructed by the City of Middletown for the use by Captain Partridge’s American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy. The original North College destroyed by a fire in 1906. After that South College is the only one building of this college. Recently, building consists of the Freeman Athletic Center including 50 meter swimming pool, the 1200 seat Silloway Gymnasium, the Spurrier-Snyder Rink for hockey, the 7500 square foot Andersen Fitness Center and the Rosenbaum Squash Center with eight courts.

Wesleyan is located in the Middletown, Connecticut. The students and staff of this college can reach at the college by driving half an hour from both New Heaven and Hartford, Connecticut. With those not having their own transportation has limited options to come to this college. There are only two buses and a train available to reach at this college. This college has 40 undergraduate academic departments which offer more than 900 courses each semester and more than 900 individual tutorials. It also offers fifteen interdisciplinary programs and nine Academic Centers. At present the college offers four minor programs. About 52% of the students choose an independent study.

Wesleyan University offers the 3-2 programs in the engineering with California Institute of Technology and Columbia University’s School of Engineering. In addition to this, it also offers BA/MA program in sciences which leads to Bachelor’s degree in fourth year and Master’s degree in fifth year. The tuition fee for the fifth year for the completion of Master’s degree is ignored. The undergraduate students have a choice to pursue their studies majoring in pre-medicine, pre-business and pre-law. The fresh students are offered with the First Year Initiative seminars by emphasizing on writing, discussion, analysis and critical thinking. The undergraduate students are encouraged to take minimum two courses from the two different departments in their first two years. They have a choice to select from the three areas ‘natural sciences and mathematics’, ‘social and behavioral sciences’ and ‘humanities and the arts’. The students can select one course out of these three areas in their second year.

This University has different departments for the study of different subjects. The College of Social Studies (CSS) focuses on the study of history, economics, government and philosophy. Likewise ‘College of Letter’s focuses on the study of history, literature, philosophy and foreign language of student’s voice. The College of the Environment has special curricular component which focuses on the study of environmental studies. This college was one of the first colleges in United States to establish a separate department for Molecular Biology & Biochemistry. In addition to this, the science, mathematics & computer science and psychology department is also made available for the post grauduate research programs.

The University students enrolling in this university are also benefited with music and film studies program. The University’s music program ‘World Music’ is taken as one of the top schools in the nation for the study of enthomusicology. Likewise, its Film studies program is ranked at seventh place among twenty five best programs in the whole world. Wesleyan has two theatre facilities ‘the Theater in the Center for the Arts which has 400 seat space and ’92 Theater, home to Second stage’. This University also sponsors international programs in the other countries like France, Italy, Germany, Mexico and Spain. Wesleyan features with the 11 graduate departmental programs in different subjects like sciences, mathematics, computer science, music and psychology. In fact, this university became the first university to start a program of Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree called ‘the Graduate Liberal Studies Program’.

The large number of students comes from all over the states every year to get admission in this University. Wesleyan was ranked at 17th Liberal Arts College in the United States by the U.S. News and World Report rankings in 2013. This University has been considered as one of most productive baccalaureate colleges in U.S. With its extensive library collections which consist of over 1.8 million volumes and 10,000 serial subscriptions, the students are benefited with proper materials. This University has produced many notable persona like ‘Colorado governor John Hickenlooper’, ‘governor of Vermot Peter Shumlin’, ‘filmmakers like Michael Bay, Joss Whedon, Paul Wietz, Mike White, Benh Zeitlin and others.
