Located in Bloomington, Illinois, United States of America, Illinois Wesleyan University is an independent, private, undergraduate liberal arts college. It was founded in 1850 with the motto – Scientia et sapientia, or "Knowledge and wisdom. It has the mission to foster the traditional liberal arts of creativity, character, and knowledge. The liberal arts and sciences have always been the foundation of Illinois Wesleyan's curriculum since its commencement and the fine arts were taught from its earliest years. The College of Liberal Arts was officially organized in 1906, and the College of Fine Arts was established in 1948. Illinois Wesleyan offered nursing study in conjunction with the Brokaw School of Nursing beginning in 1923, and in 1959 established the IWU School of Nursing with a four-year baccalaureate program. It also operated a School of Law from 1873 to 1928. It attempts to achieve the ideal of a liberal education, provide distinctive opportunities with typical curricula and programs also fostering critical thinking, strength of character, creativity, effective communication, and a spirit of inquiry. Illinois Wesleyan currently offers courses ranging from the traditional liberal arts and sciences to professional and pre-professional programs.
It offers 80 majors, minors and programs and 476 courses and currently enrolls a total of 2,020 students. The university offers Bachelor’s degree in Arts, Fine Arts, Music, Music Education, and Science. The School of Nursing provides baraccualte degree with Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. The Pre-Professional programs can be obtained in Dentistry, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Forestry and Environment Management, Occupational Therapy, Seminary, Physical Therapy and Veterinary Sciences. The University consists three colleges, the College of Liberal Arts, with 17 academic departments; the College of Fine Arts, comprising the professional School of Art, School of Music, and School of Theatre Arts. Because Illinois Wesleyan is an entirely undergraduate institution, students have the opportunity to do original research at the undergraduate level, joining forces with faculty who are at the top of their fields without competition from graduate students.
