American River College (ARC) is a state-funded California community college for higher education. It is a part of the Los Rios Community College District and is located in the Sacramento County, California, United States of America. The college’s history dates long back and it opened its doors for the first time in 1955 as California’s 61st public junior college. The college became a part of the Los Rios Community College District in 1965 and was renamed to American River College. Starting from scratch, the college has now grown into fully facilitated college with a new theatre and performing arts classrooms, the Learning Resource Center, Natomas Education Center, Health & Education classrooms and offices, gymnasium, and an expanded college library added to the existing one. The college currently enrolls more than 30,000 students (full-time and part-time) and has grown to be among the largest community colleges in the state, and is reputed as a leader in innovative programs and services. The college also offers three different types of online learning: online, hybrid, and web-enhanced. American River College is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for community and Junior Colleges of The Western Association of Schools and Colleges with the highest ranking a college can receive, renewed in 2010.  

The college offers Associate Degree in Associate in Arts Degree and Associate in Science Degree. It also has certificate programs for specific skill development and immediate employment upon completion. In addition to that, ARC also offers a variety of online programs and courses distributed into Associate in Science, Associate in Arts and Certificates. The Behavioral and Social Sciences programs of study include: economics, anthropology, history, sociology, legal assisting, international studies, political science, gerontology, psychology, and human services. The programs of study included in Business and Computer Science are Accounting, Real Estate, Business, Computer Science, Management, Marketing, and Business Technology. The English division of the college includes courses in literature, reading, composition and technical/professional writing, creative writing, and education. Fine & Applied Arts division include Art, Music, Culinary Arts/Hospitality Management, Fashion, Interior Design, Theater Arts, and Art New Media. The college program in health education is designed to provide students the essential information for the evaluation and maintenance of individual health. The Kinesiology and Athletics Program offers a wide range of courses that improve dance performance abilities, sport skills, and physical fitness. ARC also offers an A.S. degree in mathematics that provides a base of mathematics for students preparing for transfer to a four-year program in mathematics or statistics. The Science program provides a broad study in the fields of biological and physical sciences and the Engineering program provides the foundation in mathematics, physics, and engineering. ARC also has Humanities and Technical Education division. Besides all these, the college provides experimental learning through the Work Experience and Internship Program which is an experiential academic program that allows students to convert theoretical knowledge into practical knowledge while earning college credit.

ARC not only provides quality education but also ensures that the students enjoy their student life, no matter how brief it is, for academic, personal, and professional development of the students. The college encourages students to take part in numerous co-curricular and social options that enhance the overall educational experience. For this, ARC has more than 50 recognized clubs and organizations. American River College, however, does not provide on-campus living. The college provides several student services such as Assessment Center, Bookstore, College Health Center, Career Center, Learning Resource Center, Counseling, Disabled Student Programs & Services, Center for Leadership and Development, Community and Diversity Center, Child Development Center CalWorks and many others. American River College has published its own literary journal called the American River Review, since 1984. The journal is highly reputed and has been awarded with national awards and recognitions, such as the National Pacemaker Award from the Associated Collegiate Press and Gold Crowns from the Colombia Scholastic Press Association. ARC is equally popular for various sports activities and is known as the Beavers. The club sports include baseball, basketball, soccer, swimming/diving, volleyball, wrestling, softball, tennis and golf. Jamestown Community College provides financial aid opportunities within keeps it within the reach of every qualified student. The financial aid comes in the form of federal grants, state grants, loans, outside scholarships, fee waivers and student employment.

One of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the United States, American River College is located in the unincorporated area of the northern Sacramento County, California. The college welcomes students not only from all over the state but from the whole wide world as well. American River College has the highest transfer rates at UC Davis and CSU Sacramento than any other community college.
