Valdosta State University (VSU) is an American public co-educational institution for higher education, located in Valdosta, Georgia, United States of America. It is one of the three regional universities in the University System of Georgia and is the only public university in Georgia that is a member of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AACU) LEAP Employer-Educator Compact. It was founded in 1906 but opened as South Georgia State Normal College (SGSNC) in January 1913. In 1922, the school became a four-year college and was renamed to Georgia State Women's College (GSWC). Again in 1950, GSWC become a co-educational - Valdosta State College (VSC) finally receiving a university status in 1993 to become Valdosta State University. Valdosta State University offers the best of both worlds — the extensive academic, cultural, and social opportunities of a major university and the small classes and close personal attention found at smaller institutions. Valdosta State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, bachelor’s, master’s, educational specialist, and doctoral degrees.

Valdosta State University offers Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's, Education Specialist and Doctoral degrees. The  undergraduate degrees lead to Associate of Applied Science in dental hygiene, Associate of Arts, Bachelor of Arts in 14 major programs, Bachelor of Science in 11 major programs, the Bachelor of Science in Education in 8 major programs, Bachelor of Business Administration in 7 major programs, Bachelor of Fine Arts in 7 major programs, the Bachelor of Music in two major programs, the Bachelor of Science in nursing, the Bachelor of Science in athletic training, the Bachelor of Science in exercise physiology, and Bachelor of Applied Science. The Graduate degrees offered by VSU include the Master of Education in 14 major programs, Master of Arts in 4 major programs, Master of Arts in teaching in 4 major programs, Master of Science in 5 major programs, Master of Public Administration, Master of Business Administration, Master of Accountancy, Master of Science in nursing, Master of Music Education, Master of Music Performance, Master of Social Work, Master of Library and Information Science, Education Specialist in five major programs, and the Doctor of Education in three major programs, and Doctor in Public Administration.

Valdosta State is structured into five Colleges offering 56 undergraduate degree programs and over 40 graduate programs and degrees. The College of Arts and Sciences has Academic Departments including African American Studies, Biology, Chemistry, English, History, Mathematics and Computer Science, Modern and Classical Languages, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Physics, Astronomy, and Geosciences, Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Criminal Justice, and Women's and Gender Studies. The College of the Arts includes the Department of Art, the Department of Communication Arts, and the Department of Music. The Langdale College of Business Administration is composed of the Department of Accounting and Finance, Department of Management, and the Department of Marketing and Economics. The James L. and Dorothy H. Dewar College of Education’s departments include Adult and Career Education, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Curriculum, Leadership, and Technology, Early Childhood & Special Education, Kinesiology and Physical Education, Middle, Secondary, Reading & Deaf Education, Psychology and Counseling. Similarly, the College of Nursing comprises the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Arts, and Nursing. The Graduate School also includes the Divisions of Social Work and Library Science.

VSU not only provides quality education but is also dedicated to ensure that the students enjoy their student life for their academic, personal, and professional development. For this, the university has more than 200 recognized clubs and organizations. VSU has its own radio station WVVS-FM at 90.9FM, weekly newspaper called The Spectator, and annual literary publication Odradek. Valdosta State University provides housing facility through seven traditional residence halls and two apartment-style buildings located throughout the campus. The students at VSU get to experience Greek Life as the university has 13 nationally recognized fraternities and 10 national sororities with nearly 1,200 members, representing over 10 percent of the student community.
