University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) also known as ‘UNC Wilmington’ is one of prestigious and reputed Universities of United States. It is a public and co-educational University which is located in Wilmington, North Carolina, United States. Initially, the University was opened as ‘Wilmington College’ in September 4, 1947. The college was operating as a Junior college during the time of its establishment. It was offering freshman level courses to around 250 students during its first school year. Most of the students were veterans who were returning from the military service following ‘World War II’. In the year 1948, the college was accredited by the North Carolina College Conference. After earning accreditation, it became one of the members of ‘American Association of Junior Colleges’. The college was further accredited from the ‘Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ in 1952. Later in the year 1958, it was placed under ‘Community College Act of North Carolina’ with passing the control from ‘New Hanover County Board of Education’ to the board of trustees as ‘State-Supported’ College. The college was placed under the supervision of ‘North Carolina Board of Higher Education’. Wilmington College started to operate its administrative function as a senior college from July 1, 1963. It began its senior college operation after passing the legislation from the ‘North Carolina General Assembly’ which allowed school to include four-year curriculum and ‘Award Bachelor’s degrees’. On July 1, 1969, the school name was changed into ‘The University of North Carolina at Wilmington’. With the change in name, it became the fifth campus to operate under ‘University of North Carolina’ System. From August 22, 1977 the University gained authorization to offer first graduate programs at ‘Master’s’ Level. Currently, the total number of students enrolled in this University is 14,000. There are around 500 full time faculty members in the University. It is currently offering fifty two ‘Bachelor’s Degrees’, thirty six ‘Masters Degrees’ and ‘Doctoral Degrees’ in ‘Marine Biology’ and ‘Educational leadership and Administration’.

UNCW is currently offering degrees in various subjects like ‘Humanities’, ‘Sciences’, ‘Health’, ‘Business’ and ‘Professional fields’. In fact, its highly ranked ‘Marine Science Program’ has attracted many Undergraduate and graduate students from all-over the United States. The University is offering its various degrees from its five colleges: ‘College of Arts and Sciences’, ‘Cameron School of Business’, ‘College of Health and Human Services’, ‘Watson College of Education’ and ‘Graduate School’. The students enrolling in “College of Arts and Sciences” can learn the subjects like ‘Anthropology’, ‘Art & Art History’, ‘Biology and Marine Biology’, ‘Chemistry and Biochemistry’, ‘Communication Studies’, ‘Computer Science’, ‘Creative Writing’, ‘Environmental Studies’, ‘Foreign Languages & Literatures’, ‘History’, ‘Mathematics and Statistics’, ‘Music’, ‘Physics and Physical Oceanography’, ‘Psychology’, ‘Public and International Affairs’, ‘Sociology & Criminology’ and ‘Theatre’. Likewise, “College of Health and Human Services” has three schools named ‘School of Health and Applied Human Sciences’, ‘School of Nursing’ and ‘School of Social Work’ which is offering various under each school. “Cameron School of Business” has the subjects like ‘Accountancy & Business Law’, ‘Swain Center Professional and Continuing Education’, ‘Economics & Finance’, ‘Information Systems and Operations Management’, ‘Management’ and ‘Marketing’. The students wishing to join ‘Graduate School’ can learn the subjects like ‘Ph.D. in Marine Biology’, ‘Master of Public Administration’, ‘M.A. in Conflict Management and Resolution’, ‘Master of School Administration’, ‘M.A. in Criminology and Public Sociology’, ‘M.S. in Biology’, ‘M.A. in English’, ‘M.S. in Chemistry’, ‘M.S. in Marine Biology’, ‘Master of Social Work’ and many more programs. “Watson College of Education” is offering its academic programs three departments named as: ‘Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle, Literacy and Special Education’, ‘Educational Leadership’ and ‘Instructional Technology, Foundations and Secondary Education’.

Each year, the large number of students visits this University in a search of an academic excellence. The admission process of the University is very competitive. To get admission in its first year application, the students have to present their ‘academic rigor and coursework’, ‘standardized test scores’ and ‘personal qualities’. There are various types of financial aid and scholarships programs which are offered to all deserving students. Besides its high quality academic programs, it also has well-managed library. ‘William Madison Library’ provides various ‘information resources’, ‘services’ and ‘programs’. The library contains two floors. The First floor library facilitated with the areas like ‘Computer banks’, ‘the Technology Assistance Center’, ‘group work areas’ and ‘a coffee shop’ for all the students. While its second floor library has strictly enforced ‘Quite’ policy. The students can get refreshment from involving in the various sports like ‘baseball’, ‘basketball’, ‘cross country’, ‘golf’, ‘soccer’, ‘swimming & Diving’, ‘tennis’ and ‘Track & field’.
