Located in Irvine, California, “University of California, Irvine’ is a public research University. It is one of the 10 general campuses, which is operating its administrative function under ‘University of California (UC)’ system. The University was established during the period of 1960s under the ‘California Master Plan for Higher Education’. The first chancellor ‘Daniel G. Aldrich’ initiated to develop its first academic plan around ‘College of Arts, Letters and Science’, ‘Graduate School of Administration’ and ‘School of Engineering’. It was in the year 1965 when it started its operation with enrollment of total 1589 students, 119 faculty, 241 staff members and 43 teaching assistants. In 1966, the University held its first commencement with total fourteen students with offering ‘ten Bachelors of Arts’, ‘three Masters of Arts’ and ‘one Doctor of Philosophy’ degree.

The University is currently offering various academic degrees in the subjects like ‘Arts’, ‘Biological Sciences’, ‘Business’, ‘Education’, ‘Engineering’, ‘Humanities’, ‘Information & Computer Sciences’, ‘Interdisciplinary Studies’, ’Law’, ‘Medicine’, ‘Nursing Science’, ‘Pharmaceutical Sciences’, ‘Physical Sciences’, ‘Public Health’, ‘Social Ecology’ and ‘Social Sciences’. In the academic year of 2011-2012, the University awarded total 8443 degrees, 6766 Bachelor’s Degrees, 1105 Master’s Degrees, 102 M.D.s and 57 J.D.s and 413 Ph.D.s and Ed.D.s. The University is operating its academic programs under twelve schools, one Department, two programs and various other interdisciplinary programs. Currently the University’s academic units consist the schools: ‘Claire Trevor School of the Arts’, ‘Francisco J. Ayala School of Biological Sciences’, ‘Paul Merage School of Business’, ‘School of Education’, ‘Henry Samueli School of Engineering’, ‘School of Humanities’, ‘Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences’, ‘School of Law’, ‘School of Medicine’, ‘Program in Nursing Science’, ‘Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences’, ‘School of Physical Sciences’, ‘Program in Public Health’, ‘School of Social Ecology’ and ‘School of Social Sciences’. Besides this, it also has various research organizations like ‘Beckman Laser Institute’, ‘California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2)’, ‘Center for Complex Biological Systems’, ‘Center for Global Peace and Conflict Studies’, ‘Center for Cognitive Neuroscience’, ‘Center for Unconventional Security Affairs’, ‘Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center’, ‘Institute of Transportation Studies’, ‘National Fuel Cell Research Center’, ‘Reeve-Irvine Research Center’, ‘Center for the Study of Democracy’, ‘Center for Health Policy Research’, ‘W.M. Keck Center for Accelerator Mass Cpectrometry’, ‘Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center’, ‘Institute for Genomics and Bioinformatics (IGB)’, ‘Center for Machine Learning and Data Mining (CML)’ and ‘University of California Transportation Center (UCTC)’. Currently the University has total enrollment of 23,375 undergraduate students, 3247 postgraduate students and 2966 doctoral students.

Each year, the large number of students visits this University in a search of an academic excellence. The admission process of the University is very competitive. In the fall of 2014, the University received total 66,508 applications. Among the application received, total 23,573 freshmen were admitted. To get admission, the students have to meet some criteria. The applicants must have average high school GPA score of 4.02, an average ‘ACT’ composite score of 27 and average combined ‘SAT’ score of 1844. The University doesn’t discriminate any of the students. In fact, the University has 55.7% enrollment of Asian American students. In addition to this, it has 17.5% enrollment of White American students, 16.0% Mexican American, 4.4% Spanish American, 2.9% African American, 2.9% Decline to State and 1% American-Indian students. The most popular programs offered by the University for the freshmen are Biological Sciences, Engineering, Undecided/ Undeclared, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, Humanities, Information and Computer Sciences, Social Ecology, Arts, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Health Sciences, Nursing and other. In the academic year 2014, total 66,508 applications were received. Among from the applicants, only 23,573 students were admitted.

The students enrolled in the University are also benefited with an affordable tuition fees. It doesn’t charges high amount of tuition fees. Likewise, the University also provides various scholarships to the graduate and undergraduate students. The merit based scholarships are provided to those students who demonstrate high level of academic achievement. The transfer students are benefited with merit based scholarships like ‘Regents’ Scholarships’, ‘The UCI XIV Dalai Lama Endowed Scholarship’, ‘Henry Samueli Endowed Scholarship’, ‘John Ichiro Yasuda Memorial Scholarship’ and ‘UCI Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship’ and various need based scholarships like ‘Brython P. Davis Scholarship’, ‘Elliott Family Foundation Scholarship’, ‘Laurel Wilkening Scholarship’, ‘LaVerne Noyes Scholarship’, ‘Mabel Wilson Richards Scholarships’, ‘Malcom Stacey Memorial Scholarship’, ‘Osher Foundation Scholarship’, ‘Stanley Behrens Scholarship’ and ‘Town and Gown Scholarship’.

The University is also known for its sport teams ‘Anteaters’. The sport team frequently participates in NCAA’s Division I as a member of ‘Big West Conference’ and ‘the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’. The students can get enjoyment from the various sports like baseball, cross country, basketball, soccer, volleyball, track and field and water polo. Till date, the University has won 28 national championships and had also won 64 individual national championships. Through its quality education, it has produced more than 124,000 alumni.
