The largest university in the state of South Dakota, South Dakota State University (SDSU) is a public land grant university and sun grant college. It is located in Brookings, South Dakota, United States of America and was established on February 21, 1881 as Dakota Agriculture College. It was founded under the provisions of the 1862 Morril Act and offers programs of study harmonious to or required by this Act. It finally achieved the status as a university when the South Dakota Legislature renamed from South Dakota State College to South Dakota State University on July 1, 1964. In accordance with this land grant tradition and mission, the university has a special focus on academic programs in pharmacy, liberal arts, agriculture nursing and engineering. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has classified SDSU as a Research University with high research activity. South Dakota State University is governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents and has been approved of the full, ten-year reaccreditation by the Higher Learning Commission. 

South Dakota State University awards Associate Degrees, Bachelor’s Degrees, Master’s Degrees, and Doctoral Degrees through eight of its school and colleges. Students can choose from 74 majors, 42 specializations, 67 minors, 30 master's degree programs, 13 Ph.D. programs and two professional doctorates. The College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences offers a premier agricultural curriculum with over 20 majors and specializations, has eight academic departments, and is home to both the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station and SDSU Extension. The College of Arts and Sciences is the home of the humanities, arts, and the social and behavioral sciences and offers major and/or minor programs leading to associate, bachelor, master’s, and doctoral degrees. The College of Education and Human Sciences offers degree in business, economics, and hospitality.  The Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering offers undergraduate, graduate and associate degrees through eight departments. The College of Nursing offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees. The College of Pharmacy offers a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharm.D. and is the academic home of the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) program. The Graduate School offers 43 graduate programs in six academic colleges and also provides online courses. The Van D. and Barbara B. Fishback Honors College works to create an environment where talented, motivated students receive a world-class education through Honors general education classes, colloquia, contracted honors courses, and independent study projects —at no additional cost. With an outstanding research facility SDSU currently ranks among the Midwest's top research universities, notably in the fields of engineering, biological science and agricultural science.

In addition to providing quality education, South Dakota State University makes sure that the students there have a thriving life and provides facilities necessary to ensure that. The students have a wide variety of residential hall and apartment living choices to make the students feel at home. The university encourages active student life with over 200 student organizations to choose from. It ensures that the students get to experience Greek Life through eight men's sororities and four women's fraternities. SDSU provides various services to the students through wellness center, disability services, multicultural center, American Indian education and cultural center, The university boasts of its Hilton M. Briggs Library which contains over 635,000 volumes, 79,000 maps, 1,800 journal titles (with 28,000 additional titles available online), and 315,000 government documents. The campus also has two museums and publishes its own newspaper called The Collegian. The university also encourages students to take part in physical activities with numerous group exercise programs and classes offered along with personal training. The university has a track, a rock climbing wall, three basketball courts, a competition size swimming pool, and numerous weights and cardiovascular equipment. Known as the Jackrabbits, they compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level in all sports, including the Football Championship Subdivision. The college is represented by the colors maize and blue. The university is also is a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference and the Western Wrestling Conference.  The South Dakota State University provides various financial aid opportunities which keeps it within the reach of every qualified student. The financial aid may be offered in many forms such as grants, loans, student employment and scholarships.
