Sacred Heart University often referred to as SHU is an American private, Roman Catholic university. It is located in Farifield, Connecticut, United States of America and was established in 1963 by the Most Reverend Walter W. Curtis, Bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport, Connecticut as an independent, Catholic University to provide the community with an affordable, quality education. It was the first Catholic university in the whole of United States to be staffed by the laity. Sacred Heart University is the second largest Catholic university in New England, and offers more than 40 degree programs to over 6,000 students at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels at five colleges: College of Arts & Sciences, John F. SHU not only provides quality education but also ensures that the students enjoy their student life, no matter how brief it is, for academic, personal, and professional development of the students. The college encourages students to take part in numerous co-curricular and social options that enhance the overall educational experience. For this, SHU has 50 recognized clubs further organized into Academic, Media, Multicultural, Recreational & Social and Service Clubs. Sacred Heart University also gives the students a chance to enjoy the Greek life with nearly 800 members through 6 national and a local sororities and 5 national and local fraternities and. It has residence facility provided to its freshmen at Seton Hall, Merton Hall, and Roncalli Hall and also has dining on campus. The junior and senior residential students are housed in Oakwood Garden Apartments, Parkridge Townhouses and Apartments, and Taft Commons. In total, there are 10 residential buildings, with 70 percent of the full-time undergraduates residing in University housing. The university also provides several student services via International Student Services, Shuttle and Transportation, William H.Pitt Center, Student Union, Health and Wellness Center, Career Center, Intramurals and many others. SHU is equally popular for various sports activities and is known as the Pioneers. Sacred Heart University competes in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I in the Northeast Conference (NEC), Atlantic Hockey, Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association(EIWA), and the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA). There are nearly 800 students who participate in the university's 31 athletic teams including 17 female teams and 14 male teams along with over 500 students participating in 23 Club Sports. In addition to its affordable fees, the University also provides financial aid opportunities which keep it within the reach of every qualified student. The financial aid comes in the form of grants which need not be paid back, loans that must be repaid, scholarships awarded to academically deserving students and work-study opportunities that allows working and earning money.
The main campus is located in suburban Fairfield, 50 miles north of New York City and 150 miles south of Boston.
