Norfolk State University is a public, HBCU University established in 1935. The university holds the geographic location in Norfolk, Virginia, United States. With a motto “Achieving with Excellence” the Norfolk University is currently functioning under the presidency of Eddie N. Moore, Jr.
Norfolk State University (NSU) is a coed, liberal arts, historically black university holding a nickname Spartans. The University holds the membership of Thurgood Marshall College Fund and Virginia High-Tech Partnership. The University has been warned with a status by regional accreditor, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, for economic and authority matters.
September 18, 1935 stands as the date of establishment of historical Norfolk State University. The college sheltered 85 students in its first class carried in 1935. Mr. Samuel Fischer Scott a graduate of Virginia Union and of Portsmouth native performed as the first president of the Norfolk State University.
After being separated from VUU, the school was named Norfolk Polytechnic College in the year 1942. In 1944 the school became a fragment of Virginia State College. On the occasion of its 15 years of establishment, the college expanded its faculties. The City of Norfolk offered a space for the opening of permanent college building. The bachelor’s degree was granted to the students by Norfolk State College in the year 1956.
After the division of the college from Virginia State College, the college was renamed as Norfolk State College in the year 1969. The student registration reached 54,000 in the same year when college was ascribed from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The first Master’s Degree was served by the college in Communications in 1975 and in Social Work in 1976.
The college was in course of defining success and excellence expanding its working horizon and challenging its own abilities. After its determination and hard work for years, the college was crowned university status in the year 1979 by the prestigious General Assembly of Virginia. The college changed its name into Norfolk State University after being awarded university status.
In course of expanding and crawling towards success, the college sheltered 7,200 students in the year 1985. The college celebrated 50thanniversary in the same year. Ten years later the number of enrollment reached 9,112.
