North Carolina Central University is a public university situated about a mile south of downtown Durham, North Carolina, United States. Originally a university for the colored race, it was founded by Dr. James Edward Shepard in 1909 as the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua. It became the first public liberal arts institution for African Americans in the nation. It was chartered as a private institution in 1909 and opened on 5 July, 1910. In 1925, with the expansion of its programs to a four-year curriculum, it was renamed as the North Carolina College for Negroes. In 1947, the name was finally change to North Carolina College at Durham. It was the nation's first state-supported liberal arts college for black students. The University now offers bachelors and master’s degrees, a Juris Doctor, and a Ph.D. in Integrated Biosciences to a varied student population. NCCU is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, master's, education specialist, and doctoral degrees. At the moment NNCU has at a total of 8115 students, including 6369 undergraduates and 1786 graduates / professionals.
NCCU gives the top most priority to academic excellence. It offers a wide range of 37 Bachelor’s, 39 Master’s/First Professional and a certificate and doctoral degree with 146 concentration courses. It has two colleges and five schools. The College of Behavioral & Social Sciences is focused on the needs of students interested in behavioral and social sciences such as Sociology, Social Work, Psychology, Political Science, Human Sciences, Criminal Justice, Public Health Education, Public Education & Recreation and Public Administration. The College of Arts and Sciences provides outstanding research, teaching, learning and valuable service opportunities for students in the humanities and natural and physical sciences consisting of 13 undergraduate programs, 8 master programs in Art, Biology, CREST, History, Language & Literature, Music, Theater/Drama, Global Studies, etc. and a PhD in Integrated Biosciences. The School of Business is focused on to prepare students for life-long success and a commitment to community service. The School of Nursing meets the challenge of the needs for quality health care locally, nationally and globally. The School of Law provides a challenging and broad educational program aimed at stimulating intellectual inquiry and to fostering a deep sense of professional responsibility and personal integrity to produce socially responsible members in the legal profession. The School of Library and Information Sciences has the goal of making the Library and Information Science workforce a more diverse and exciting place, rich with innovation and social responsibility. The university offers Undergraduate Studies to creates opportunities for innovation and academic excellence. To obtain an undergraduate degree, the students get to choose from various degrees such as Accounting, Finance, Hospitality and Tourism, Management and Marketing. The Master of Business Administration (MBA) program is designed to prepare students for positions of leadership in business, industry and government with the opportunity to improve the student’s business skills for analysis and strategic thinking. NCCU also offers a joint program that allows students to complete business administration and law degrees or business administration and information science degree, in less time that it would take to earn them separately. NCCU has a Division of Extended Studies which offers programs designed especially for busy professionals, who must balance their time between job, home and other personal obligations such that it conveniently fits into a student's professional and personal schedule. The courses and programs are delivered through the Internet, videoconferencing, and at off-campus locations. It also has Summer Sessions offered to undergraduate and graduate. North Carolina Central University also offers the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degree in Integrated Biosciences since began fall 2012. the university offers interdisciplinary doctorate on two concentrations—Biomedical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
NCCU lets its students have a happening student life with more than 100 student organizations related to academic majors or other interests, Greek organizations, the Student Government Association, and volunteer opportunities. It has over 11 residence halls, Campus Recreation and Wellness Center complete with racquetball courts and a swimming pool and over five dining locations spread throughout campus. NCCU is active in sports and is known as the NCCU Eagles. The major sports are Baseball, Basketball, Golf, Tennis, Bowling, Softball, Volleyball and many others. NCCU in collaboration with the African American Jazz Caucus sponsors a Jazz Research Institute which conducts a Summer Jazz Festival annually and offers a program in Jazz Studies. To encourage the students with their dream, NCCU provides Community College Transfer Scholarships, National Alumini Scholarships, Chancellor’s Cycle consisting of a total of 75 scholarships awarded to the most deserving and needy students. Under the sponsorships of its Division of Research and Economic Development in collaboration with its six colleges and schools, NCCU has established its Research System Approach to Innovation and Sustainability involving basic research ranging from biomedical/biotechnology to pharmaceutical sciences to social and behavioral.
