Longwood University is located in Farmville, the heart of Virginia, United States of America. It is a coeducational public institution that combines a private university experience with a state university. It was established in 1839 with the motto ‘Discover the Power in You’ as the Farmville Female Seminary Association but became a university only on 1 July, 2002. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate and master's degrees. At the moment, it has a total of 4800 students, including 4080 undergraduates and 720 graduates. Currently, Longwood ranks 31st among all Regional Universities in the South, including private institutions and 12th in the Top Public Schools category for Regional Universities in the South in 2014 according to the U.S. News & World Report.
Longwood offers over 100 majors, minors and concentration in four colleges. The Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sciences has programs such as Biological and Environmental Sciences, Music, Nursing, Psychology, Homelalnd Securities, Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice Studies, Theater, Art and Graphic Design, Maths and Computer and many more. The College of Business and Economics has degree programs including Business Administration, Economics and minors in Economics, Cyber Security, Forensics and Policy and Business Administration. The College of Education and Human Services has departments and programs such as Education and Special Education, Health, Athletic Training, Recreation & Kinesiology, etc. and centers and services of Office of Professional Services, Institute of Teaching through Technology & Innovative Practices, Speech, Hearing and Learning Servies and Infant & Toddler Connection. The College of Graduate & Professional Studies has and the Professional Studies has Online and Off Campus Programs. The university offers 7 graduate majors with 4 graduate professional endorsements, 17 different degree concentrations, and a graduate certificate. The programs are designed primarily for the full-time employed individual who wants to enroll in graduate studies on a part-time basis. In addition to that, there is full-time study available for English; Reading, Literacy & Learning; Communication Sciences & Disorders; the MBA online; and the Education major concentrations in Algebra & Middle School Mathematics, Health & Physical Education, and Special Education. For the undergraduate program, the College of Business and Economics offers courses in Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Economics. In addition to that, minors are also offered in Business Administration, Economics, and Cyber Security, Forensics, and Policy and Supply Chain Management. For the graduate students, Longwood offers MBA program which provides a solid business foundation with a clear emphasis on leadership values and ethics with the four programs – General Business concentration- part-time, General Business concentration- full-time, Retail Management concentration- part-time and Real Estate concentration- part-time. The classes are online but students need to come to campus each summer for an extended weekend residency session.
Longwood is quite popular for the extra curricular activities with more than 125 clubs and organizations. The athletics included Division I Atheltics and Recreational Sports. Known as the Longwood Lancers, the university has many club sports, including baseball, rugby, men's lacrosse, golf, roller hockey, football, and others. Longwood has kept up its various annual traditions such as the Spring Weekend concerts and Oktoberfest and has a student programming board, Lancer Productions, which provides quality entertainment to the campus community. The university provides great dining facilities and has a fully equipped library called the Greenwood Library with numerous books, catalogues, databases, journals and articles, CDs & DVDs and labs. Longwood University Greek life (fraternity and sorority) consists of three councils: Interfraternity Council, National Pan Hellenic Council and College Panhellenic Council and has secret societies called CHI and Princeps. It also has a Student Health & Wellness Center where the students are examined and treated by clinicians.
