One of the best Universities of United States, Duke University is a private research University which is based in Durham, North Carolina. The University was founded by Methodists and Quakers in 1838 and it shifted its place to Durham in 1892. In its initial time, the University was named as ‘The Duke Endowment’ which was established by the tobacco and electric power industrialist ‘James B. Duke’. The University’s main campus is situated in more than 8,600 acres on three contiguous campuses based in Durham. The main campus was designed largely by the African American architect ‘Julian Abele’. In the fiscal year of 2012, the Universities research expenditures were $1.01 billion.

Talking about its historical background, the University was initiated as Brown’s Schoolhouse in 1838. In the year 1841, it became the Union Institute Academy. It further changed its name as Normal College in 1851 and with the support from Methodist Church, it was named ‘Trinity College’ in the year 1859. The college shifted its place to Durham due to generosity from the powerful and respected Methodists ‘Julian S. Carr’ and ‘Washington Duke’. In 1892, with the donation of Carr the original Durham Campus was established. For the initial endowment and construction, Washington Duke provided an amount of $85,000. It was in 1924 when his son ‘James B. Duke’ established ‘The Duke Endowment’ with a huge amount of $40 million trust fund. The Universities original campus ‘East Campus’ was rebuilt in Georgian-style buildings from the year 1925 to 1927. During the period of 1990s, the construction process began with 314,000 square foot which was given a name of ‘Levine Science Research Center (LSRC)’. The research center was opened in the year 1994. In the year 1998, the President ‘Nan Keohane’ started five-year $1.5 billion ‘Campaign for Duke’ fundraising effort. The University collaborated with National University of Singapore to develop joint medical program. In 2007, Duke with collaborating with the city of ‘Kunshan’, China’ and ‘Wuhan University’ formed a new joint venture University ‘Duke Kunshan University (DKU)’. In the year 2012, 16 female students studying in the University launched ‘Who Needs Feminism’ social media campaign.

This University has 220 buildings established on 8470 acres of land. The campus has four main areas named as ‘West’, ‘East’, ‘Central’ and ‘the Medical Center’. The major attraction of the main campus is 55 acre Sarah P. Duke Gardens which was established in the period of 1930s. Duke University is also known for its huge volume library system ‘the Duke University Library System’. In fact, the library system is one of the largest private research University Library Systems in U.S. There are 17.7 million manuscripts, 1.2 million public documents and thousands of movies and videos. The main library complex of the University is ‘William R. Perkins’. Besides this, it has separately administered Ford, ‘Divinity School’, ‘Goodson Law’ and ‘Medical Center Libraries’. In addition to its well facilitated library, it is also well known for its well-designed museum ‘Nashum Museum of Art’. The museum was opened at a huge cost of more than $23 million which contains more than 13000 works of art.

This University consists of 6495 undergraduate and 8105 graduate and professional students. The large of numbers of students frequently visit this University to get admission in the University. The admission process of Duke is highly selective. For the class of 2018, it received large number of applications of 32506 and among them only 10.7% of applications were admitted. The University has constructed two schools for the undergraduate students ‘Trinity College of Arts and Sciences’ and ‘Pratt School of Engineering’. Duke provides certain financial aid to the deserving students. It is providing Fulbright, Rhodes, Goldwater and Truman scholarships. In the fiscal year, the University endowment was valued at $60 million. There are various academic facilities like an art museum, the Duke Forest, several language labs, the Duke Herbarium, a phytotron, a lemur center, a nuclear magnetic resonance machine, a marine lab and a nuclear lab.

The University is conducting its education program through the Graduate School, the Nicholas School of the Environment, the Pratt School of Engineering, the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, the Divinity School, the School of Law, the Fuqua School of Business and the Sanford School of Public Policy. Duke is currently offering 46 arts and sciences majors, 49 minors, four engineering majors and Program II which is helping the students to design own interdisciplinary major in ‘arts & Sciences’. About 85% of total students of Duke enroll in ‘Trinity college of Arts and Sciences’ and rest are enrolled in ‘Pratt School of Engineering’. Trinity College’s curriculum operates under revised version of ‘Curriculum 2000’. The curriculum has an aim of helping the students to develop critical facilities and Judgement. In the fiscal year 2012 the research expenditures were $1.01 billion. The researchers of this University have made breakthroughs in biomedical engineering departments and three dimensional ultrasound diagnostic system. Considering its high quality education, the University was ranked at 23rd in QS World University Rankings.

Duke is also well-known for its athletic activities. The University teams which is named ‘Blue Devils’ compete as a member of ‘National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level. There are various sports available like baseball, basketball, cross country, fencing, football, lacrosse, golf, swimming & diving, track & field, tennis and wrestling. The University has produced many renowned faces in the world like Richard Nixon, Elizabeth Dole, Eric Shinseki, Fred Brooks, John Cocke, Paul Farmer and many more.
