One of the reputed community college of the United States, “College of Lake County” was established in the year 1967 in Grayslake, Illinois. The college is currently serving around 18,000 students in career programs, transfer programs, GED and adult basic education, training for business and non-credit & Career Development. CLC was formed in 1968 when A. Harold Anderson and Paul W. Brandel gave donation of 181 acres of land. The college was initially named as ‘Grayslake Campus’. The first president of this college was appointed as Dr. Richard G. Erzen. He held the position until 1978. The first classes were held on 25th September, 1969 with the enrollment of 2360 students. The college was offering 224 courses in its initial phase. The students had to pay $7 per semester hour. This college was running its classes in six-building pre-fabricated complex which was constructed at cost of about $1 million. In the last month of 1969, a referendum passed the authorization to construct the permanent campus. It started to add the buildings. As a result, in the year 1974 two wings named A and B wings were completed on Grayslake Campus. In the same year, the college gained its first five-year accreditation from North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. It was in 1978 when the college opened an outreach center in Waukegan. By the year 1981 ‘the Lakeshore Campus’ opened in Waukegan. In addition to this, the further property was purchased for the Southlake Education Centre in 1998. After nine years of that, new classroom buildings were established at the Southlake Educational Center which was signified as ‘Southlake Campus’.
In the year 2005, an additional University center called ‘the University Center of Lake County’ was added to Grayslake Campus. It was functioning independently as a part of CLC. The University Center was offering an opportunity for all the CLC students and other local residents to pursue further education without relocating a greater distance. Currently, there are total 19 Universities which are offered at University Center.
