Brenau University is a private, not-for-profit, undergraduate and graduate level higher education institution with multiple campuses and online programs. Founded in 1878 as a private institution for the education of women, Brenau started off as Georgia Baptist Female Seminary and was renamed to Brenau, a linguistic amalgam formed from the German word brennen, “to burn”, and the Latin aurum, “gold” in 1900. It is located in Gainesville, Georgia, United States of America with the motto “As Gold Refined by Fire”. Brenau College became Brenau University in 1992 which reflected the change in comprehensive programs of study, the diverse student body, new and stricter employment criteria for professors, and the scope of available graduate programs. It received accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, reaffirmed in 2011. With the history of a hundred and thirty six years, Brenau now has grown to a university that enrolls around 2,800 students seeking degrees ranging from two-year Associate of Arts through doctorates. Brenau’s Online College was formed in 2002, using internet technology to reach students who are unable to join classes on campus because of personal or professional responsibilities. The main campus of the Georgia-based institution, the Brenau Women’s College, is in Gainesville with other campuses in Augusta, Kings Bay and in two metro Atlanta locations, Norcross and Fairburn.
Academically, Brenau comprises four colleges. The College of & Mass Communication is further divided into School of Business which provides Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Business and Organizational Leadership, with majors in specific areas and the department of Mass Communication which follows a media convergence philosophy reflected in the broad basis of the major’s core classes and the additional specialization of a required concentration. The College of Health & Science consists of the Department of Maths and Science, School of Nursing, School of Occupational Therapy, Department of Physical Therapy and Department of Psychology with various graduate and undergraduate degrees. The College of Fine Arts & Humanities prepares students to live amazing lives of personal contentment and professional contributions with majors and minors in fine arts disciplines like theater, music, dance, interior design and art and design and humanities disciplines like liberal studies, modern language and others. The College of Education helps students prepares for positions in the teaching field through the undergraduate and graduate teacher certification programs and advancement opportunities in the field for certified teachers completing graduate degrees in Early Childhood, Secondary Education, Middle Grades, Special Education and others. The university offers Doctoral degree in Advanced Practice Nursing and Leadership and Management. Despite the reasonable fees, there are a few students who cannot afford even that. For those students, the university has the provision of financial aid in the form of grants, scholarships and student loans. It provides Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Direct Loans, Federal Direct PLUS Loan, Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant, HOPE Scholarship, Student Access Loan (SAL) Program or through Veterans Administration Educational Benefit, Private education loans and the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program.
At Brenau, the students are encouraged to live an Extraordinary Life representing a tapestry of rich cultural and geographic backgrounds, interests, talents and viewpoints in an environment that both nurtures and nudges students from their comfort zones. The Women’s College continues as the heart of the university with approximately 900 students from 20 states and 23 other countries. Thirty-three percent are from minority groups (not including international students) and 17 percent are older than 25. It has nearly 50 student-run clubs and organizations, including a range of eight national sororities on campus. In addition to helping students develop social skills, the organizations also instill Brenau’s strong sense of social responsibility, civic engagement and global culture awareness for life in a changing world. It also offers students abroad the opportunity to study and live on campus with different programs of study and thrive on giving students a cultural experience all its own.
