Armand Assante Biography
Armand Assante is an American actor for the big and small screen and stage. He celebrates his birthday every year on October 4 and was born in the year 1949. His name at birth was Armand Anthony Assante, Jr. but is better known by his professional name Armand Assante. He is known for his leading role in television movies such as John Gotti in Gotti and Odysseus in The Odysseyand many others. He is also known for his work in Jack the Ripper, Q&A, The Road to El Dorado, American Gangster among others.
He was born in New York City, United States and spent most of his early life in Cornwall, New York. His father, Armand Anthony Assante Sr., was a painter and an artist and his mother Katherine was a music teacher and poet. His father had Italian American ancestry and his mother had Irish American descent, so he has a mixed ethnicity of Irish and Italian American. He grew up in a devout Roman Catholic family and follows it as his religion. He went to Cornwall Central High School and then enrolled at American Academy of Dramatic Arts to where he received his dramatic training.
His first screen appearance was with a minor role in the 1974 cult movie The Lord’s of Flatbush. During the same time, he appeared as a regular on two NBC soap operas The Doctors and How to Survive a Marriage. His breakthrough role came in 1980 with the movie Private Benjamin. His tough looks got him sinister roles in movies like I, the Jury, Rage of Angels, The Marrying Man, Hoffa and many more. In 1996, he was cast in the made-for-television biopic Gotti with the lead role of John Gotti. The role even landed him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie. His notable work also includes The Mambo Kings, Judge Dredd and American Gangster. During the 2000s decade, he appeared in Breaking Point, The Man Who Came Back, Smile, Chicago Overcoat, La Linea, California Dreamin’, Last Run, Partners in Action, One Eyed King, and many more. He gave his voice to the character Tzekal-Kan in the 2000 animated feature film The Road to El Dorido. He is still keeping up the good work and his recent work can be seen in the movies Dead Man Down, Shadows in Paradise and in series such as Chuck and Human Target.
