Anderson Hays Cooper is an American television personality, journalist and author. He was born in the year 1967 celebrates his birthday on June 3 every year. He is best known as the primary anchor of the popular CNN news program Anderson Cooper 360°. He also hosted his own syndicated daytime talk show Anderson Live and is also famous for his work on American Morning and World News Now.
Cooper is a native of New York City, New York, United States and was born and raised there. He is the younger son of Wyatt Emory Cooper, a writer and Gloria Vanderbilt the heiress, artist, designer, and writer. Cooper has two older siblings (half-brothers), Leopold Stanislaus "Stan" Stokowski (born 1950), and Christopher Stokowski (born 1952), from Gloria Vanderbilt's ten-year marriage to the conductor Leopold Stokowski. His maternal grandparents were millionaire equestrian Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt and socialite Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt, and his maternal great-great-great-grandfather was Cornelius Vanderbilt of the Vanderbilt shipping and railroad fortune. He studied at the Dalton School, and on graduating from there a semester early, he travelled around Africa for several months on a "survival trip". He received his bachelors of arts degree in political science from Yale University. He resided in Trumbull College and graduated from Yale in the year 1989.
Cooper spent two summers as an intern at the Central Intelligence Agency while he was still at college. He preferred a career in journalism, despite not having journalistic education. He started his career during the early 90s as a correspondence worker. During that time, he lived in Vietnam for a year studying Vietnamese language and assembling and filming reports of Vietnamese culture, life and war torn regions which aired on Channel One. After that, he joined ABC News in 1995 and was positioned as the co-anchor of World News Now. He became the host of ABC's reality show The Mole in 2000 and was also the fill-in co-anchor for Live with Regis and Kelly. Then he started working for CNN as the co-anchor of American Morning and later had his own show Anderson Cooper 360° and has covered important news events for the channel ever since.. Cooper has served as a correspondent for the CBS News program 60 Minutes since 2007. Besides that, he was the voice of the narrator for the 2011 Broadway revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. He has written many articles as a freelance writer and published his memoir titled Dispatches form the Edge in May 2006 which topped the New York Times bestseller list on June 18, 2006. His contribution to journalism has been recognized through various awards such as Emmy Award (1997, 2006 and 2011), Peabody Award (2005), National Headliner Award (2005) and many others.
He revealed that he had suffered from dyslexia as a child. For years, he avoided discussing his private life in interviews and now he openly admits that he is gay. He has a boyfriend as well. His partner is a gay bar owner Benjamin Maisani. They have been dating since 2009. Cooper came out to the public in July 2011 when same-sex marriage became legal in New York.
