The University of Maryland, College Park usually known as the University of Maryland, Maryland, is a public research university located in College Park, in Prince George’s County, Maryland, United States. It was founded in the year 1856 as the Maryland Agricultural College. In 1916, the state took complete control of the school and was consequently renamed as Maryland State College. On 9 April, 1920, the college merged with the established professional schools in Baltimore and finally formed the University of Maryland. It is the flagship university of the University of Maryland and is a member of the Association of American Universities. The college offers graduate and undergraduate degrees, certificate programs.
Academically, the university offers various graduate and undergraduate degrees through its thirteen different colleges and schools. The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR) offers broad academic programs covering numerous topics in natural resources, agriculture, food science, environmental technology, and much more and has Extension offices and research centers throughout the state of Maryland. The College of Computer, Mathematical & Natural Sciences is home to and to ten academic departments – Astronomy, Biology, Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, Entomology, Physics, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Geology and has twelve major research institutes.
